PURE JOY WHENEVER!

Des Moines Christian School's theme passage for the 2011-2012 school year was Proverbs 3:3-5, and the catchphrase, "Trust in the Lord," focused our attention on God as the source of our faith and trust.  We are adopting a new passage for the 2012-2013 school year -- James 1:2-4 -- and the catchphrase is "Pure Joy Whenever."  Can you "find" joy wherever and whenever you go?  Is the joy pure (or tainted by inauthenticity or faulty motivation)?  I call all of us to think about how we can find joy in spite of circumstances.  As with Jesus and men like Paul, we can experience pure joy in spite of trials in our lives, because we know that the trials develop perseverance in our lives, and that perseverance will hopefully one day result in our being mature and complete before the Lord. Find "pure joy whenever!"

This Week's Opening Quote -

"Let eloquence be flung to the dogs rather than souls be lost. What we want is to win souls. They are not won by flowery speeches." (Charles H. Spurgeon, famed English preacher/evangelist, 1834-1892)

This Week's Scripture -
"Tell your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children to another generation." (Joel 1:3, English Standard Version)

This Week's Prayer -

"Lord, You have done such marvelous works in my life. You gave me first birth, and, now that I have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior of my life, You gave me second birth! I praise You for the presence of the Holy Spirit in me and the hope of everlasting life! Lord, I cannot be quiet! If I didn't speak out about You, the very rocks would cry out! I will tell my own children of Your greatness, and my prayer will be that my children will tell their children - and every generation thereafter! AMEN!

Elementary Principal Karla Lowe and I produced videos about the procedures with our new traffic pattern in the Des Moines Christian parking lot, so, if it helps you to both hear and see an explanation of the procedures, please click here. Mrs. Lowe and I appreciate the involvement of several DMC Moms and students who illustrated the new system! Thanks to all for your patience and courteousness as you contribute to a more safe and less frustrating car line experience!

With bittersweetness, I announce to you that Varsity Girls Basketball Coach Dave Stubbs has accepted a new coaching position with the men's basketball team of Central College in Pella. At Central, he will also be blessed to coach his own son, Branden (DMC '11). We are sad for DMC but happy for Coach Stubbs, as God has now given him a new venue for building-up men. What success Coach Stubbs has had at Des Moines Christian! His record as coach of our boys' team was 129-20, a winning percentage of .866, one of THE best win-loss records in the State of Iowa during that time period; and, during his 1 season as our girls' varsity basketball coach last year, his team was 19-5 (.792). As you have heard me say and seen me write in the past, the wins are not the most important indicator of our coaches' success. Coach Stubbs discipled athletes so they represented Christ and Des Moines Christian in an exemplary way. Best wishes to you at Central College, Coach Stubbs!

KCCI-8 was at our football practice on Monday, August 20th, filming the varsity team for a football promotional spot of the Metro's football teams. The segment aired on the 10:00 p.m. news on Tuesday, August 21st. ABC-5 has asked that our football co-coaches, Craig Carlson and Jeff South, be present in-studio on Friday night - August 24th - following our game with Madrid. They have graciously accepted and will be representing DMC on Channel 5 between 10:30-11:00 p.m. on Friday night. What great opportunities to promote our Christian perspective on activities at DMC and to be salt and light in this world! Praise the Lord for such opportunities!

Do you know Michael Cowell, junior high social studies teacher? Well, let me introduce him to you! Michael is a graduate of DMC ('2000). His parents, Faye and Don, were stalwart supporters of the school throughout their time in the school family with Michael, Megan, and Mindy. Don actually served on the Board of Directors at DMC. Michael played basketball on the three most successful basketball teams in DMC history during the late 90s. Michael attended Northwestern College in St. Paul, and he began his teaching career at his alma mater! Michael has served as a varsity basketball coach with both the boys' program and girls' program. His wife, Sandi, is also a teacher, and the Cowells have been blessed with two handsome sons, Lincoln, a pre-school student at DMC, and Tyler, still pre-pre-school! (Can you see Michael's love for history with the choices of U.S. Presidents' names for their sons' names? I'm pulling for Kennedy with the next boy or girl!) We are so pleased that a DMC alumnus is now a professional educator in our midst!

Praise God with me that our new instrumental music instructor/director, Rob Lane, his wife, Leila, and daughters Ruth, Abi, and Hannah found a home!  I also praise God for the enthusiastic turn-out of "movers" from Des Moines Christian and Cornerstone Church, who were able to unload a large moving van, trailer, and several vehicles in only 2 hours on Sunday night, August 19th!  Welcome, Lane family!

The Iowa Association of Christian Schools (IACS) represents our best interests when interacting with legislators throughout a school year. Eric Goranson, our IACS lobbyist, has built excellent relationships with Iowa Senators, Representatives, and other lobbyists at the Capitol. If you would like to read the most recent IACS newsletter of August 21, 2012, please click here. Please be actively involved in enthusiastically promoting the causes of Christ-centered, biblically-directed education!

DMCS Introduces Online Donations! Such is another giant step for mankind - and DMCS!  We can now accept online donations through Dwolla.  Unlike traditional payment networks or credit cards, which would cost DMCS 3-5% of every transaction, Dwolla processes payments for only 25 cents per transaction.  In addition, DMCS doesn't maintain any credit card information.  For the donor, Dwolla works similar to PayPal. To make an online donation, go to http://www.dmcs.org/donate. Click on "Donate online with Dwolla." On your first visit, you will be asked to set up your Dwolla account by transferring funds from your bank account or credit card to your Dwolla account. On subsequent visits, you will only need your Dwolla personal information number to sign in.  What an easy, safe, and convenient way to support Christ-centered education!

All DMCS parents, we would love for you to become a Box Tops supporter if you haven't already done so. Now through September 15th, you can earn 5 Box Tops to be credited to our school account just by going to www.btfe.com and joining as a new supporter of Des Moines Christian School. Check out the website and play the Chex Mix Match 3 Game or Spin the Chex Apple Cinnamon Wheel to see if you win any bonus Box Tops. We have had numerous DMCS winners in the past month. These games are free, and you have a chance to win every day you play!

We are a charter school for The Great Relationship Experience! Please keep investing in your relationships this summer - with Christ and with all of the members of your family!

Two years ago, we studied great relationships through the filter of the Joseph the Dreamer.  This past year, we look at life through Nehemiah's eyes.  In 2012-2013, The Great Relationships Experience schools across the United States will take a markedly different path.  America's Family Coaches and Des Moines Christian School are placing the six keys to godly relationships DIRECTLY INTO THE HANDS OF PARENTS!  Moving forward, we are pleased to announce that TGRE will be available directly to you parents to utilize on your schedules, in your homes, and in your own creative and innovative ways through e-book format -- allowing for maximum exposure to families and true ownership of TGRE concepts by parents.

On Wednesday, August 22, 2012, America's Family Coaches Vice-President Gary Lydic exhorted the men of CrossTrainers to "be there" as a positive influence in the culture of sports. He closed with a VERY remarkable story about a pick-up basketball game he, Dr. Jim Dobson, and others had with Pistol Pete Maravich. If you would like to read my summary of Gary's message, "Be There," please click here.

MAKE IT A GREAT SCHOOL YEAR!

Closing Quote:
"We spend the first twelve months of our children's lives teaching them to walk and talk and the next twelve telling them to sit down and shut up." (Phyllis Diller, American comedienne, 1917-2012)
