PURE JOY WHENEVER!

Des Moines Christian School's theme passage for the 2011-2012 school year was Proverbs 3:3-5, and the catchphrase, "Trust in the Lord," focused our attention on God as the source of our faith and trust.  We are adopting a new passage for the 2012-2013 school year -- James 1:2-4 -- and the catchphrase is "Pure Joy Whenever."  Can you "find" joy wherever and whenever you go?  Is the joy pure (or tainted by inauthenticity or faulty motivation)?  I call all of us to think about how we can find joy in spite of circumstances.  As with Jesus and men like Paul, we can experience pure joy in spite of trials in our lives, because we know that the trials develop perseverance in our lives, and that perseverance will hopefully one day result in our being mature and complete before the Lord. Find "pure joy whenever!"

This Week's Opening Quote -

"Holiness, not happiness, is the chief end of man." (Oswald Chambers, author of My Utmost for His Highest)

This Week's Scripture -
"Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God." (2 Corinthians 7:1, English Standard Version)

This Week's Prayer -

"Lord, the start of a new school year brings fresh beginnings. Help me to develop habits which will allow me to become more like Your Son Jesus. I know those habits begin one decision at a time. So help me, God. Make me holier this year. Give me strength to honor You. Amen."

How very sad to attend the funeral of a DMC father just before the start of this school year. Thai Seo Leng passed into eternity on Thursday, August 9, 2012, and an overflowing audience celebrated his life on Sunday, August 12th. That audience included a large number of DMC students, parents, and staff members supporting students Linette and Torrance Leng. Mr. Leng was only 60, but he obviously lived a full life as a hard working entrepreneur who loved his family. One of the first Vietnamese refugees in Des Moines, he worked his way from dishwasher at the Embassy Club to owner of his own business, The House of Thai Restaurant on 100th Street in Urbandale. Westchester Evangelical Free Church Senior Pastor Don Long did an excellent job in delivering a eulogy and making the Gospel personal to everyone in the audience, but the highlight of the service was hearing all five of the Leng children speak about their father. With unbridled emotion, each fought through their tears to say how proud they were of their father and how fortunate to have been his children. I hope my two daughters speak of me in such terms at my memorial service. I was so proud of Torrance and Linette for eloquently eulogizing their father. Would you please encourage, pray for, and support the Leng family in the months and years ahead? Last year, the DMCS Board approved a new fund, the "Bereavement Fund."  DMCS is able to accept contributions into this fund and distribute money for students who have experienced the death of a parent.  A family is eligible for funding from the Bereavement fund for one school year.  Others can assist financially for the 2012-2013 school year through this fund. If you are interested in making such a donation to the Bereavement Fund to assist Torrance and Linette Leng, please submit a check with "Bereavement Fund" in the memo line of the check.

To replace the rah-rah community time of the all-parent meeting, we have enhanced the meet-and-greet of the Tuesday immediately prior to the first day of school, so join us for refreshments in the Multi-Purpose Room before, during, or after meeting your students' teachers and administrators! Remember, this is also a day for drop-off of supplies to classrooms or lockers. So join us anytime between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21st for introductions, fellowshipping, and refreshments!

Do you know Don Caves? Mr. Caves serves as the junior-senior Bible instructor and Secondary Chaplain for Des Moines Christian. He is the devoted husband of Ann and father of Justus, Charis, Duncan, Wesley, Darby, and Carsten. Mr. Caves was an accomplished college football player, AND he graduated with a Master's degree from seminary! Prior to coming to DMC as a Bible teacher and football coach, he served with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Wisconsin. Don is a very committed man of God, and he is a remarkable example of someone who pours his life into the lives of his students. Students positively respond to his personality and disciple-making. During my 12 years at DMC, the seniors have selected Mr. Caves as their graduation speaker for a vast majority of commencement exercises, a testament of their love and regard for him. I greatly appreciate one of the highlights of my school year - being able to co-teach a college level Screwtape Letters literature unit in senior English just prior to graduation. Please take the time to thank Mr. Caves for his investment of time in the young people of our school. Please take the time to thank Mrs. Caves and their children for so generously sharing Mr. Caves with his DMC family!

Many of you already know our new Staff Accountant in Accounts Payable, because she is a DMCS parent. Welcome Koty Vande Griend (pronounced van duh greened)! Koty is from Sioux Center, Iowa. She graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and Management from Valparaiso University of Indiana. She brought a great deal of experience in the business world to Des Moines Christian, having worked in management at Walgreen's, Cabela's, and Wells Fargo. She is a kind and gentle soul who has caught on quickly to her new position through her obvious work ethic. I praise the Lord that we were able to hit the ground running with Koty during a quick transition in the summer! Please welcome her to her new responsibilities!

Another new staff member is no stranger to many in the school community, since she, too, is a school parent, and she has most recently served as Administrative Assistant to the Athletic Director and Director of Curriculum and Assessment. Welcome Paula Osborn to her new responsibilities as Administrative Assistant to Secondary Guidance Counselor! Paula has been a dedicated, loyal, hard-working, joy-filled, godly member of our staff, and I expect nothing less in her new position. She is a spirited woman who will engage you in witty repartee to the point of YOUR breaking point! Please help her acclimate to a much-increased set of responsibilities to support Cindy Kostek, our excellent Secondary Guidance Counselor. Paula will also be an office "generalist," teaming to provide first-rate customer service to everyone in the Secondary department. Paula was an English major at Coe College. (I knew there was another reason I liked her so much!) She also served for five years as an associate in the Financial Aid Office of Coe and two years as an administrative assistant with the West Des Moines Public Schools. The interview team which gave input about Paula and other candidates said the following about Paula:

  • Exciting
  • Energetic
  • Experienced in different venues and schools
  • Knowledgeable
  • Excellent work ethic
  • Good answers to questions
  • Brings a lot to the table
  • Positive relationships are already built.
Has familiarity with the computer system [a major job responsibility]

Welcome aboard to your new responsibilities, Mrs. Osborn!

As a point of information, we have eliminated Paula's previous responsibilities to support the Curriculum Director, since we have increased the summer hours of Jahna Duda, but the-one-the-only Stephanie Veurink returns to her previous role as part-time Administrative Assistant to the Athletic Director. We are SO pleased that Stephanie was willing to take on these few hours a week to help new A.D. Greg Van Soelen as he transitions to his new responsibilities! Welcome back, Stephanie!

How about a laugh? In early-August, I was invited to watch a baseball team populated entirely by Des Moines Christian Elementary students. What a joy to watch these boys in action! They hustled and attempted to give their abilities back to God for His glory! A funny thing happened to me during the game. I was not in a suit and tie; I was adorned with t-shirt, baseball cap, and khaki shorts - with my daughter and son-in-law's dog in-tow. On more than one occasion, I attempted to be friendly with the younger brother of one of the baseball players, also a DMC student. I couldn't understand why he was ignoring me. So I tried again to say hello. He walked up to one of the Moms near me, and he said to her, "My Mom told me to never speak to a stranger." Ah, that was why he wasn't friendly with me. He didn't recognize me in different clothes and in a much different context. Another DMC student (who had recognized me) said to him, "But he's at Des Moines Christian!" We'll refer to the young man who hadn't recognized me as Andrew, because that's his actual name. Andrew walked up to get closer to me, studying me intently, and then asked, "Are you the custodian?" Without missing a beat, I enthusiastically responded, "Yes, I'm the custodian of Des Moines Christian!" He responded, "Didn't you speak at chapel?" I said, "Yes, I did. The custodian typically speaks at chapel 2 or three times a year!" He was so excited about this "inside information" that he an over to his mother and father farther down the fence line, declaring, "The Des Moines Christian custodian is here!"

New 7th through 12th grade students are invited for breakfast with Student Council on Thursday, August 23rd at 7:45 a.m. in Mrs. Kolling's classroom. We look forward to meeting all of you and welcoming you to Des Moines Christian!

We are a charter school for The Great Relationship Experience! Please keep investing in your relationships this summer - with Christ and with all of the members of your family!

Two years ago, we studied great relationships through the filter of the Joseph the Dreamer.  This past year, we look at life through Nehemiah's eyes.  In 2012-2013, The Great Relationships Experience schools across the United States will take a markedly different path.  America's Family Coaches and Des Moines Christian School are placing the six keys to godly relationships DIRECTLY INTO THE HANDS OF PARENTS!  Moving forward, we are pleased to announce that TGRE will be available directly to you parents to utilize on your schedules, in your homes, and in your own creative and innovative ways through e-book format -- allowing for maximum exposure to families and true ownership of TGRE concepts by parents.

Next to Joe White's building of a cross and delivery of an extremely passionate message at the most recent PromiseKeepers in Des Moines, Sam Rodriguez, Jr. delivered THE MOST IMPACTFUL LIVE MESSAGE I have ever heard during PromiseKeepers at UNI in Cedar Falls on Saturday, July 14, 2012. If you would like to read my written summary of Pastor Rodriquez's message, "A Call to Action," please click here.

Dr. Raleigh Washington is the President and Chief Executive Officer of PromiseKeepers, a ministry which serves men in the United States. He delivered the closing message of the PK at UNI on Saturday, July 14, 2012. If you would like to read my written summary of Dr. Washington's message, "A Call to Courage," please click here.

DMCS Board Treasurer Nate Schelhaas invited me to accompany him to this year's Willow Creek Leadership Summit on August 9-10 at Lutheran Church of Hope, and I am now hooked!  I hope to attend every year.  What an excellent seminar on leadership!  I was blessed by all of the speakers over the course of the two days.  If you dare to wade through the 32 pages of my transcription with editorializing, please click here.  (I did only a cursory proofreading, so I apologize for any typographical or grammatical errors in advance.)  Enjoy!

In a topical message series, "Sports and Culture," Elim Fellowship Senior Pastor Michael Hurst brought the Word of God alive for the men of CrossTrainers on Wednesday, August 15, 2012. If you would like to read my summary of Michael's message, "The Spirit of Intimidation: From Fear to Faith," please click here.

I recently read an OUTSTANDING message by Lee Strobel, delivered at a church on the Sunday morning immediately following the tragic summer shooting in Colorado.  The sermon was entitled "Why Does God Allow Tragedy and Suffering?"  Such seems to be a key stumblingblock for people who resist the Gospel message.  You will recall that Lee Strobel is the noted atheist-turned-evangelist who wrote The Case for Faith after his conversion.  The 5-page message is well worth your time, especially if you need to be encouraged yourself, or if you need ideas for convincing non-believers that God is NOT the author of evil.  The article can be accessed here.
