PURE JOY WHENEVER!

Des Moines Christian School's theme passage for the 2011-2012 school year was Proverbs 3:3-5, and the catchphrase, "Trust in the Lord," focused our attention on God as the source of our faith and trust.  We are adopting a new passage for the 2012-2013 school year -- James 1:2-4 -- and the catchphrase is "Pure Joy Whenever."  Can you "find" joy wherever and whenever you go?  Is the joy pure (or tainted by inauthenticity or faulty motivation)?  I call all of us to think about how we can find joy in spite of circumstances.  As with Jesus and men like Paul, we can experience pure joy in spite of trials in our lives, because we know that the trials develop perseverance in our lives, and that perseverance will hopefully one day result in our being mature and complete before the Lord. Find "pure joy whenever!"

 This Week's Opening Quote -

"Perhaps it takes a purer faith to praise God for unrealized blessings than for those we once enjoyed or those we enjoy now." (A.W. Tozer, noted Twentieth Century pastor and author)

This Week's Scripture -
". . .we give thanks to you, O God." (Psalm 75:1, English Standard Version)

This Week's Prayer -

"Lord, we do give thanks. Thank You for life. Thank You for our families. Thank You for Des Moines Christian School, Lord. Thank You for the financial resources available for people to enjoy a Christ-centered, biblically-directed community at DMC. Thank You for the ability to serve You! I pray that we bring You honor and glory through the activities of Des Moines Christian. Amen."

Congratulations to graduated senior Elliott Frey (DMC '12)!  Elliott has been named Second Team All-State Catcher for Class 2A by the Iowa Sports Spotlight (formerly Iowa Sports Connection). What a prestigious honor for a fine young man and great representative of Christ! To see the full listing of All-State teams, visit the Iowa Sports Spotlight website.

How about another introduction of a new DMC staff member for 2012-2013?! MANY of you already know Ric Radcliffe, because he has served as an assistant coach for the varsity football team, assistant coach for our junior high track team, and choreography coach for the show choirs! Now, he will be joining us as a part-time history teacher! He's a Renaissance Man - scholar, athlete, and dancer! Ric was the starting quarterback on the Wheaton College football team. Most recently, he has served as an Iowa Area Director of K-Life Ministries, an arm of Kanakuk Kamps of Missouri. His college football coach enthusiastically told me, "Any school would be fortunate to employ Ric!" Another reference told me, "In the teaching environment, he will thrive. He loves coaching. He loves being with kids. He's a kid magnet. Kids love to be with him. Teaching is the right direction for him." Yet another reference stated, "Spiritually, Ric is solid. He has a huge heart for kids and to serve. He wants to see kids grow. He cares about people. He has a great personality. He's fun to be around. He's a man of integrity. Ric would do really well in a teaching environment." Still another reference told me, "Ric is very faithful to his belief and convictions in the Lord. It doesn't matter who is around him. I would have no hesitation about his character. He's got a very true relationship with the Lord. He values that relationship above all things, and that relationship determines what he does. He's an outstanding teacher. He's always well prepared. He's very faithful. He's very teachable. He's one of the most confident guys I know; that's a big strength of his; it's something you don't find in a guy very often - both confidence and teachability." And another: "He's constantly in the Word. He's memorizing the Word. He has a heart for the Lord and for His people. He has great character. I have found him to be extremely knowledgeable. I enjoy listening to him teach Socratically with students. It's not just downloading. He engages students. He talks with passion about history. He loves history. That excites me! That motivates me!" And a final reference told me, "He's a leader. He shows conviction. Kids really like him. He's a good communicator." Wow. Can he also leap tall buildings in a single bound? Just kidding. The interview team, which included junior high and high schools students, had the following to say about Ric:

  • Great
  • Awesome
  • Humble
  • Loving
  • Servant
  • Heart for God
  • Knowledgeable
  • A good fit
  • Discipler
  • Disciplined
  • Coach
  • Approachable
  • Sincere
Welcome, Mr. Radcliffe!

As long as I am telling the stories of new staff members, I think it's about time I introduced all of the veterans of this staff. By so doing, I can help you understand the heart and soul of the school, because a school is not the buildings and campus; a school is THE PEOPLE. First, think about a man who does know every nook and cranny of these 26 acres - Cliff Anderson, Supervisor of Buildings, Properties, and Grounds. (Quite a title, eh?!) Cliff is a jack-of-all-trades and master of all! His history is long with DMC. He was actually a School Board member when the school navigated extremely turbulent waters in 1998-1999. His rock-solid faith and dedication to the founding principles of DMC made him a VERY steadying influence at that time. I am so pleased to report that Cliff was on the Board which hired me as Superintendent, so I owe him a great debt of gratitude for helping to bring me here - and now as one of my most trusted and joy-filled colleagues. He loves the Lord. He's got a keen intellect. He's a team player who wants the best for the school as a whole. Cliff owns his own remodeling business, recently winning the Greater Des Moines Homebuilders Council Remodeler of the Year! But he spends most of his time at Des Moines Christian. He is skilled with all trades and has a great sense of systems, given his training as an Engineer from Iowa State University. Another thing you should know about Cliff is that he writes EXTREMELY well for an engineer. No offense, engineers, but writing skill does not always positively correlate with the science, math, and technology abilities. Another thing you should know about Cliff is the Lord recently put him in remission from a very deadly throat cancer; as a result of multiple surgeries and treatments, Cliff has lost the richness of his voice, but, praise the Lord, he has not lost his voice completely! Please show your appreciation to Cliff when you see him at the start of the new school year, because he and his co-workers - Brian Bailey, Teresa Degner, Marshall Henderson, Jack Stuart, and Mary Stuart - have the building spic-and-span! No one has more pride in the maintenance and improvement of Des Moines Christian School than Cliff Anderson. You should also know that Cliff loves it when volunteers help with projects. You don't have to be skilled to be a grunt worker for Cliff.   I am a perfect case-in-point, since I'm non-mechanical. I share Cliff's love for the school property, and I help him when I can. Would you like to do so, too? Call him at 229.2482, and he'd love to put your skills and attitudes to use! Thank you, Cliff Anderson, for everything you do at DMC! We want to assist you with the efforts, so you can enjoy more time with your lovely bride, Carol, also one of the most wonderful people I know!

I kicked off a new 6-week teaching series in CrossTrainers on August 8th. The topical series details the Christian's role in positively calling the American culture to a more positive model of athletics. Following my time before the men in the morning, one of the guys - a DMC Dad - came up to tell me that he is so impressed that graduated senior Annette Bosman ('12) has been willing to coach his young daughter in softball. Such is a core difference of Des Moines Christian as a school. Older godly students disciple younger students, perpetuating a positive witness for Christ through athletics! Praise the Lord for that distinct difference with DMC!

How pleased I was to see that Senior Josh Rowley ('13) had been featured in a recent Des Moines Register article! Praise the Lord for Josh's heart and the work the Lord is doing in Mongolia!

On Friday, August 3, 2012, Des Moines Christian was represented by teachers and administrators at the first-ever Iowa Principal and Teacher Symposium at Drake University.  You may or may not be interested in the ideas from the symposium, but I always want to make my notes available to others in the school community, so, if you would like to access my 22 pages of typewritten notes, please click here.  (In advance, I apologize for any grammatical, typographical, or mechanical errors, since I did only a cursory proofreading, given the busy-ness of preparations for the school year ahead.)   I thought the presenters provided MANY ideas for the improvement of education in Iowa, most notably the increasing involvement of teachers in leadership and collaboration with all constituent groups.  Iowa HAS slipped to the middle of the pack educationally in the United States.  We don't measure our success exclusively by standardized tests, but this is one significant indicator, and parents in a private school definitely should expect a high return on investment.  Des Moines Christian School must continue to seek ways that distinguish us as separating from any under-performing or mediocre schools.  God expects nothing less than excellence for His honor and glory. "Striving for Excellence in All of Our Endeavors" is one of the school's core values.

To replace the rah-rah community time of the all-parent meeting, we have enhanced the meet-and-greet of the Tuesday immediately prior to the first day of school, so join us for refreshments in the Multi-Purpose Room before, during, or after meeting your students' teachers and administrators! Remember, this is also a day for drop-off of supplies to classrooms or lockers. So join us anytime between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21st for introductions, fellowshipping, and refreshments!

We are a charter school for The Great Relationship Experience! Please keep investing in your relationships this summer - with Christ and with all of the members of your family!

Two years ago, we studied great relationships through the filter of the Joseph the Dreamer.  This past year, we look at life through Nehemiah's eyes.  In 2012-2013, The Great Relationships Experience schools across the United States will take a markedly different path.  America's Family Coaches and Des Moines Christian School are placing the six keys to godly relationships DIRECTLY INTO THE HANDS OF PARENTS!  Moving forward, we are pleased to announce that TGRE will be available directly to you parents to utilize on your schedules, in your homes, and in your own creative and innovative ways through e-book format -- allowing for maximum exposure to families and true ownership of TGRE concepts by parents.

Central Iowa's own Dr. Gary Rosberg brought a powerful message to the men of PromiseKeepers at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Saturday, July 14, 2012. God wrote Gary's conclusion. If you would like to read my written summary of Gary's message, including his surprise conclusion, "A Call to Lead," please click here.

Pastor Dobie Weasel's PromiseKeepers message of Saturday, July 14, 2012 included a sobering story about a boa constrictor, which will remain forever etched in the grey matter of my brain! If you would like to read my written summary of Pastor Weasel's message, including the story about Weird Steve and Weird Mary's snake, "A Call to Nobility," please click here.

I organized a six-week CrossTrainers speaking series on the topic of sports. I spoke to the men on Wednesday, August 8, 2012. Michael Hurst, Gary Lydic, Mike Swaim, Dr. Brian Brown, and Chris Creighton are exhorting the CrossTrainers during all subsequent Wednesdays through September 12th. If you would like to read my speaking notes for
August 8th, "Reclaiming the Light in Sports," please click here.

Rob and Leila Lane are looking for a home in the Greater Des Moines area. Mr. Lane is the new Secondary Instrumental Music Instructor/Director. Are you aware of an affordable three- or four-bedroom home for sale or rent which would accommodate their family? If so, please contact Secondary Principal Austin Temperley at 252-2490.

A DMC parent recently wrote to me, "A few years ago, I attended a 'Fresh Encounters' workshop, and my prayer life has never been the same.  I now have a deeper understanding of the God-given gift of prayer and how God intends for prayer to grow our relationship with Him. . .to enjoy His presence. I'm excited that Pastor Mike Rose of First Federated Church has invited Daniel Henderson back to Central Iowa and has extended an invitation for our DMCS community to join the audience.  We have an wonderful opportunity to enjoy this Fresh Encounter Prayer Seminar at First Federated Church (4801 Franklin Avenue) on Saturday, August 18th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., including a worship-based prayer service led by Daniel Henderson on Sunday, August 19th at 6:00 p.m. Daniel Henderson, workshop leader/teacher will lead participants into a deeper encounter with God through worship-based prayer. Both the workshop and the worship-based prayer service are open to anyone who wants to go; but you need to register.  There is no registration fee; however, the hosts at First Federated want to know how many people to expect. There will be a lunch available on Saturday, from Jimmy John's (for $8, which should be paid at First Federated by August 16th). If you can't make the Saturday workshop, make time for the worship-based prayer service on Sunday evening...it will be a fresh encounter with God Please follow this link to register.

 About the workshop:

The Fresh Encounters workshop will. . .

  • motivate you to enjoy your times with God more than ever before as you discover the balanced, biblical model of worship-based prayer.
  • help you discover fresh creativity and depth in your spiritual growth.
  • motivate and train your church, small group, or class for greater passion and effectiveness in prayer.
  • equip you to help family and friends to become more effective in worship and prayer.

Discover a Fresh Encounter with God. You'll never pray the same again!

About Daniel Henderson:

As a Senior Pastor for over 20 years, Daniel Henderson brought prayer-based revitalization to several churches and is now dedicating much of his energy to help congregations across the country experience renewal and turn-around. He is President of Strategic Renewal, which exists to ignite the heart of the church through personal renewal, congregational revival, and leadership restoration for Christ's glory. In that role he travels extensively, leading churches in renewal experiences, equipping church leaders, and speaking at various conferences.

The next ePulse will be published on Friday, August 17, 2012.
