This Week's Opening Quote -
"I was born with music inside me. Music was one of my parts. Like my ribs, my kidneys, my liver, my heart. Like my blood. It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene. It was a necessity for me-like food or water." (Ray Charles)
This Week's Scripture -
"My heart, O God, is steadfast, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music." (Psalm 57:7, New International Version)
This Week's Prayer -
"Lord, thank You for the gift of music. Thank You for the order, ardor, mathematics, and creativity of music. Thank You for allowing us to worship You through our voices and instruments. Please nurture the love of music and talents of our musicians during the summer and in the school year ahead. Amen." |

I hope the first week of summer vacation has been enjoyable for you! I thought a nice touch of summer communication from the school should be to periodically "introduce" the new 2012-2013 staff members to you. So I decided to start with Steve Britt, the new Secondary Instrumental Music Instructor/Director. (I introduce him first to you because the Board approved him on May 21st, but he was not able to officially accept the position until May 25th (due to another interview), so his name did not appear on the May 21st Board report.) Steve has almost 20 years of experience and excellence -- most recently in Harlan, but also including Rockwell-Swaledale in Iowa and Bond County in Greenville, Illinois. He has a wealth of background in all phases of an instrumental music program, most notably excelling in the arena of jazz band, winning multiple consecutive state championships at Harlan.
His references indicated the following:
- "Look, he's the one. His character is extraordinary. Seriously, he is a cut above the rest. His spiritual sense is something I aspire to and emulate. He puts God first in his life. . . .He helped mold my son into a great, great young man. I'm eternally grateful. He's sincere. he loves kids. He's like a brother to me. It would be a mistake not to hire him. If you don't, some other school will. I wouldn't hesitate on this."
- "You're going to struggle to find anything negative about Steve Britt. . . .We have not had any character issues with Steve. . . .He's three hours on the road every day [from West Des Moines to Harlan and back]. He's on the road at 5:00 a.m. for 6:30 rehearsals. He's home at 7:30 every night. Here's a guy who is dedicated. . . .The biggest issue will be that too many kids will be interested! You'll struggle to find something he's not good at. . . .I'm shocked he is still available."
- "He has great character. He's a great band instructor. He has some of the greatest capacity as a teacher of all of the teachers in the building. He's just awesome. . . .Steve makes every student feel comfortable. He is so patient. . . .He builds relationships with students. He's outstanding. He's a great guy! He's good! If there were a stack of 50 candidates on my desk, and I pulled his application, I'm taking his app in a heartbeat. There is not going to be another person better than him out there. I've got the king. If you have the ace, you beat me. But I think I hold the winning card."
The interview team said all of the following about Steve: "He's genuine. He has a good sense of priorities and perspective. He has a God-given ability to make music and teach music. He is spiritually sound. We'd be blessed to have this man. We need to get him and keep him! Mr. White and he would complement each other well. He will have great rapport with students and parents. He's a really good communicator." All four students liked him. Steve is also an accomplished professional musician.
Please welcome Steve Britt to the Des Moines Christian fold! |

Lindsay Lettow, DMC '08, recently captured the Division-2 National Heptathlon Championship again, and I thought you might be interested in reading about Lindsay's excellence through the following links:

http://www.ucmo.edu/athletics/track/11-12%20News/Ken%20B%20Jones%20finalists.pdf
Also, for the second straight year, Lindsay was named the National Women's Field Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association! Lindsay is now a four-time recipient of the Women's Field Athlete of the Year award, winning last season as well as in 2011 and 2012 for her performance during the indoor track season. Lindsay is now one of only two Division II athletes to win the award four times in their career. Her Heptathlon score of 5,748 at the NCAA Championships set new UCM and MIAA records, was the top score in Division II this season, and third-best in D-II all-time. She also qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials, taking place in Eugene, Oregon on June 21 - July 1! Praise the Lord for Lindsay Lettow's remarkable abilities as a student-athlete! |

Practice begins at 8 a.m. Monday June, 18th and runs through Friday August 10th. The program runs 5 days a week with an optional long run on Saturday morning with the Dowling Catholic Cross Country team.
