This Week's Opening Quote -
"Summer's lease hath all too short a date." (William Shakespeare)
This Week's Scripture -
"Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near." (Mark 13:28, New International Version)
This Week's Prayer -
"Lord, summer is upon us. Where did the school year go?! It was so fast. Time seems a blur to me. But now is a time to re-charge after so much time, thought, and energy were expended during the school year. Lord, help me to enjoy time away from Des Moines Christian. But give me longing to return, so I might bring you more honor and glory in the future. Keep everyone in my family safe. Give us a time of sweet fellowship in June, July, and August. Amen." |

During the last week the school year, I received an enjoyable e-mail message from one of our Substitute Teachers: "I just wanted to share a cool God-moment with you and another reason why I love teaching in a Christian school!!!!! I had such a good day subbing yesterday. I was afraid the students would be quite squirrely with it being so close to the end of the year and it being their last Friday, but I laid down the law right away and they were great. :) I also kept them very busy, and we had some great teaching/learning going on! During Bible, there was a side story about how the hymn, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," was written first as a poem for the author to encourage his mother. Then, later, someone else wrote the music and put the poem with the music. It was fascinating to hear the whole story. I was surprised that only one of them had even heard that song before! It turned out that the words/music were in the back of their Bible workbook, so I sang the first verse for them, and then we all sang the 2nd and 3rd verses together. I told them I hoped that song would stick in their head the rest of the day (or longer), and that they would remember the lyrics, and that no matter how BAD things/life gets, how down they might be feeling, He is ALWAYS there for us NO MATTER WHAT. We can look to Him to fulfill all of our needs, whether it's the loss of a grandparent, the betrayal of a friend, etc. I went into much more detail than that, but it was SO COOL to have a discussion like that at school!!!! Praise God for the freedom of teaching in a Christian school!!!! I also tried to stress to them that it is such a privilege to be able to go to a Christian school for this very reason! We are SO blessed! (The interesting thing is, the one girl who had heard that song before said her grandma had often sung it to her starting when she was tiny. Ironically, this student's grandma had passed away and gone to be with the Lord the very night before this lesson! So, now, those same words her grandma had used to sing to her granddaughter would possibly again be used to comfort her again at the time of her Grandma's death. Gotta love God's timing for bringing that song into our Bible lesson at just the right time!!) That preaches! What an enjoyable testimonial of the spiritual freedom we have at Des Moines Christian school! |

I received the following e-mail from a kindergarten teacher who reminded me why we do what we do at Des Moines Christian School: "The kindergarten classes took a field trip to the zoo on Friday, May 18, 2012. There was an Ice Age exhibit that we got to see. One group of 2 boys and a parent were reading a plaque all about one of the animals. When it came to the part that said this animal lived 25 million years ago, the boys turned to the parent and matter-of-factly said, 'That's not true; that's a lie.' The parent asked me if I have taught them this, and I shared that we have talked about it a few times during the year, but not recently. The parent was amazed they would recall this information and remember what we have said in class. I hope this encourages you as we close another year; students ARE learning to think critically and boldly state what is biblical truth." I WAS encouraged by the bold statement of these students' beliefs! Praise the Lord that we do not blindly accept all that is state in the culture! |

As the school year comes to a close and we look forward to summer, The Great Relationship Experience (TGRE) is gearing up for next year. We are excited to dig deeper into TGRE for 2012-2013. We can't wait to share the 6 Keys to Godly Relationships with your students in innovative, creative, and exciting ways. With more ideas that ever for engaging parents and tying the keys to classroom learning, the 2012-2013 school year is shaping up to be our best yet! A huge thanks to everyone who took advantage of even one TGRE activity throughout the school year! Formal links to America's Family Coaches' website will not continue for the summer, but we do want to outfit you and your students for success this coming year. We all know students can have a difficult time 0f retaining information over the summer. Make it a little easier for them by providing activities that solidify TGRE principles:
- Pen Pals: Encourage relationship-building this summer. Pair up your students and have them fill out the "pen pals" worksheet (available at the AFC website). Make sure they know the pal's address and the dates for letters. Doesn't it feel special when your student/s get a crisp envelope in the mail?!
- Reading List: AFC also recommends a summer reading list (found at the AFC website) for students and their families. We encourage families to read together and discuss the principles of TGRE they find in their readings. Teachers may want to use books found on the list early next year to recapture what students may have learned from their parents during the summer months.
Thank you once again for your dedication to TGRE! As always, if you have any questions or comments please contact America's Family Coaches by e-mail (katie@TheGreatMarriageExperience.com) or by phone (515.334.7482, Extension 9116). |
