Remember, our schedules are out-of-kilter during conference week, so pay close attention for the ways that the changes impact your family.  K-12 will dismiss at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of next week.  K-12 conferences are scheduled for 2:30-4:30 p.m. and 5:30-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.  (The staff meals are scheduled for 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.)  Conferences on Wednesday are scheduled for the afternoon until 3:45 p.m.  There will be no afternoon half-day Pre-Kindergarten in Early Education on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  There will be no morning 3 year old class on Friday.  Pre-K parents have conferences on Tuesday and Thursday.
Before-school and after-school child care is available on the conference dates, and child care is available on Friday, February 10 for those families who are registered in Early Education. Child care families should enter through the Elementary or Secondary entrances and proceed to the Secondary Library; Early Education families with fobs are able to enter the Early Education entrance as well.  Thanks for your patience during an "interesting" week!  Enjoy your three-day weekend!

Theme of the 2011-2012 School Year:

TRUST IN THE LORD!

Memory Scripture for the 2011-2012 School Year:

Proverbs 3

Key Verses for 2011-2012:

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."  (Proverbs 3:5-6, English Standard Version)

Verses for the Week:

"1My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, 2for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.  3Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. 4So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man. 5Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. 7Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. 8It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones 9Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce 10then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. 11My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline or be weary of his reproof 12for the LORD reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights. 13Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, 14for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. 15She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her.  16Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand areriches and honor. 17 [Wisdom's] ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. 18[Wisdom] isa tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called blessed. 19 The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens; 20by his knowledge the deeps broke open, and the clouds drop down the dew. 21 My son, do not lose sight of these -

keep sound wisdom and discretion.  22will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck. 23Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble.(Proverbs 3:1-23, English Standard Version)

This Week's Opening Quote -

"Nothing can bring a real sense of security into the home except true love." (Billy Graham)

This Week's Scripture -

"Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble."(Proverbs 3:23, English Standard Version)

This Week's Prayer -

"God, Your love reassures me. You love me sacrificially and unconditionally. You love me even when I am difficult to love. You love me when I disobey You. I trust in Your wisdom and love, Lord. Allow me to be more loving, obedient, wise, and submissive to You on a daily basis, Lord. Amen."

A kindergarten teacher wrote the following to me this week:  "Today, I played a praise and worship CD at rest time.  One of the songs is 'Firm Foundation.'  The children spontaneously began to sing along. To hear a group of kindergarteners sing, 'Jesus you're my firm foundation; I put my hope in Your Holy Word' is such a blessing.  One of the perks of being at DMC!Amen!  Amen! And Amen! Hallelujah! That preaches!  We are storing-up God's Word in our hearts at Des Moines Christian School!

Congratulations to senior Rachel Hansen and junior Hannah Lundeen, who both won awards in the regional Scholastic Art and Writing competition! Rachel won a Gold Key for her portfolio of 10 artworks and also took a Top 5 "best in show" type of award by becoming an American Visions Nominee for the drawing entitled, "A Few Good Cyclones." Hannah won a Gold Key and a Silver Key for her ceramic pieces and an Honorable Mention for a paper collage.  All Gold Key works will go on to be judged at the national level. Be sure to give Rachel and Hannah a pat on the back when you see them!  A pat on the back to Jodi Sunderman, their art instructor, as well!

Courtney Thiner has been selected as a finalist for this week's "Artist of the Week" award for the 7th-9th age group on Artsonia.  She made a beautiful clay box with a floral design. Don't be left out in the cold!  Visit our DMCS Scholastic Book Fair!  This year's theme is "It's a Reading Celebration!" with a Hawaiian flavor.  The book fair will be held on Tuesday, February 7th, 1:30-4:30 p.m. and 5:30-8:00 p.m.; Wednesday, February 8th, 1:30-4:00 p.m.; and Thursday, February 9th, 1:30-4:30 p.m. and 5:30-8:00 p.m. in our Elementary Library.  All proceeds from our fair will go towards buying more books for our library.  Students will have a chance to preview the book fair on Monday, February 6th, and will be bringing home a "wish list."  Teachers will be filling out a list of books they would like for their classroom libraries, so please consider buying a book for your child's classroom. Scholastic books are fairly inexpensive and tax-free - don't miss this tremendous opportunity!

Also, any donated items for the class baskets may be placed in the bins outside your child's classroom for the Big Blue Bash basket drawings. Tickets go on sale next week, so be sure to get your tickets! Please go to the website for more information

Thank you, Association Members, for allowing me (Dr. Bob) the privilege of re-energizing while being out-of-the-office for a couple days when I attended the ACSI Mid-America Administrators' Conference in Minneapolis on Thursday-Friday, January 26-27th!  If you are interested, I have attached my notes from the conference.  In particular, Dr. Jeff Myers, new President of Summit Ministries, was a powerful communicator.  I praise the Lord for Dr. Myers' message -- focusing on the ways that Christian school staff members are able to deepen the learning of students through the discipling relationships we enjoy.  (I was also able to see New Life Academy Head of School Cade Lambert, his school, his new home, and his family in Woodbury.  All is well with the Lambert family, and they send their greetings!)

The Nehemiah beat goes on at CrossTrainers!  I once again spoke to the men about God's work through the great leader Nehemiah by teaching expositionally through Chapter 5 in this excellent book of the Bible.  If you would like to read the outline of my teaching notes, "The Integrity of a Man and a Leader," please click here.
