Theme of the 2011-2012 School Year:

TRUST IN THE LORD!

Memory Scripture for the 2011-2012 School Year:

Proverbs 3

Key Verses for 2011-2012:

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."  (Proverbs 3:5-6, English Standard Version)

Verses for the Week:

"1My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, 2for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.  3Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. 4So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man. 5Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. 7Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. 8It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones 9Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce 10then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. 11My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline or be weary of his reproof 12for the LORD reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights. 13Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, 14for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. 15She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. 16Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. 17 [Wisdom's] ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. 18[Wisdom] is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called blessed." (Proverbs 3:1-18, English Standard Version)

This Week's Opening Quote -

"Wisdom doesn't automatically come with old age. Nothing does -- except wrinkles. It's true, some wines improve with age. But only if the grapes were good in the first place."  (Abigail Van Buren, advice columnist, 1978)

This Week's Scripture -

"[Wisdom] is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called blessed."  (Proverbs 3:18, English Standard Version)

This Week's Prayer -

"Lord, truth and wisdom are rooted in you.  Your Holy Spirit supplies the flowing power from root to trunk to branch to fruit.  Help me to abide in You, Lord.  Help me to seek Your wisdom.  And I will be called 'blessed.'  I praise You for such a blessing, Lord!  Amen."

Check out the photographs in the Des Moines Register of Major Kyle Smith presenting a United States flag on behalf of the 167th Medical Detachment to Mrs. Manderfield and third grade student Gracie Koester by clicking hereThe flag was given for the students' outstanding support of the 167th Medical Detachment during its deployments to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn.

Des MoinesChristian School recently participated in 2 separate food drives for Hope Ministries, collecting more than 1,000 food items! Praise the Lord for the leadership of our students and the generosity of all donors!  The ninth grade class challenged the other classes to a competition, and the 9th graders won by donating the most items! The 11th graders took second, with 7th grade close behind.  As part of the annual Grandparent's Day, over 500 items of food were collected.  Thank you to all grandparents, school families, and students who generously donated food items for Hope Ministries!

Praise the Lord that we are enhancing our security and safety at DMC as a result of a donor's generosity!  Beginning in January, Early Education parents will access that area of the building with fobs, since the location will be locked-down completely.  Also, we will begin limiting access to both the Secondary area and Elementary area by containing traffic to the handicapped-accessible door only at 9:00 a.m.  That way, the bad guys who don't know our building access well can be limited in their access.  (Please do not share this plan with others -- for the safety of your children.)  Coaches, P.E. teachers, and Secondary music instructors will also be limited by fobs and asked not to block open the brown doors near the trophy cases.  Thank you for learning our new "flight patterns" in the school.  Limiting access means greater safety for your children!

Hearing testswill be performed for all four- and five-year-old students on Wednesday, January 4 and Kindergarten through 5th grade students on January 5 and 6.  This is a screening process and does not identify all hearing or ear problems.  Students who do not pass this screening may receive further hearing tests by the Heartland AEA audiologist.  Parents will be notified about the results of the hearing tests, if their child does NOT pass the test.  If you DO NOT wish your child to participate in the screening program, please notify the classroom teacher or Robin Fynaardt, DMC School Nurse at 252-2488.

Immediate Opening for Part-Time Lunchroom Server: The DMCS kitchen needs a lunchroom server on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  Regular hours are 10:15 a.m. until 1:45 p.m.  If you are interested in serving one or more days, please submit your application to Julia Veenstra, Business Manager.  Applications can be found on our website under "Employment."

Never Eat Lunch Alone Again! How would you like to spend lunch with Junior High and High School students and get paid for it?  We are in need of two (2) individuals to help supervise the secondary lunchroom from the hours of 11:45-1:15pm daily. Lunchroom supervisors help oversee junior high and high school students as they eat lunch. Supervisors also oversee the student crew of lunchroom cleaners. Please check out the DMC employment page for more details.

January 2012 Teacher Resources

Fifth grade teachers Durinda Bakker and Jody Keithley prepared their students beautifully to lead Elementary Chapel on Wednesday, December 21, 2011. Not all of the technology worked, but the story rang loud and clear. If you would like to read my summary of the chapel activities, "Glory to God on the Highest!" please click here.

Upcoming Chapels:

January 4, 2012 -

Elementary - Multi-Purpose Room - Elementary Principal Jerry Clutts (8:45-9:10 a.m.)

Secondary - Gymnasium - High School Science Teacher Dean Delzell (11:14 a.m.-12:01 p.m.)

Everyone is welcome at Chapel!

PLEASE LEAD! Don't let the media and talking heads tell you how to vote! Iowans have the opportunity to have a great voice in the selection of the President in 2012, beginning with the caucuses in January.  Even if you "don't like politics," we each have a civic duty to be exert a positive influence in our government "of the people,  by the people, for the people."  By attending your local precinct caucus, you can speak, vote, and influence the process with the values that are important to you.  Learn more about how to attend your caucus at one of the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition caucus training events:

  • 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20th at Walnut Creek Church, 900 64th St, Windsor Heights
  • 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec 28th at Iowa Right to Life Committee Office, 1500 Illinois, Des Moines
  • 7:00 p.m. Thursday, December 29th at IRLC Office

Need Childcare for No School Day on January 16? There are no classes for students on Monday, January 16th.  Do you want or need a place for your K-5th graders to hang out that day?  Check out the day camps offered by Faith Lutheran Church in Clive.  Two camps are offered: American Girl Doll Camp and Puppet Camp. The cost is $30 for the day. Bring a sack lunch. (NO peanut products, please.) Registration information can be found here. Sign up with a friend!  This is a great play date opportunity for children of working parents. Questions?  Contact Melinda Littler, Director of Children and Family Ministry at 225-8334

Host Families Needed for Chinese High School Students.   The student will pay $800/month for room, food, and transportation in school districts of Urbandale, Johnston, West Des Moines, Des Moines Christian School, and Iowa Christian Academy.   At DMC students must show language proficiency and both sets of parents (biological and host) must be born-again Christians.  If you believe the student qualifies for placement at DMC, please contact Swallow Yan at 515-988-0901.

Looking for a great place to "officially" re-welcome Jesus on Christmas Eve?  Join worshippers at Waukee Community Church's celebration, 6:30 p.m., on Saturday, December 24, 2011 in the Multi-Purpose Room of Des Moines Christian School.  You can never get tired of DMC, can you?!  We can certainly NEVER get tired of Christmas!  Come, Lord Jesus, come!

The Winter Jam Christian Music Tour will be in Des Moines in January and is in need of a fifteen passenger van, with gas, to be provided for the day by a church or para-chuch organization. This is an extra vehicle any runner might be sent out in, when needed. The production company's insurance will cover it for a day. If you can help, please e-mail Jim Cordero.
