For 63 years, Des Moines Christian School has been centered on the true, unchanging Word of God. The law of gravity, which establishes the resting point for the carpenter's plumb bob, was established by God. God established the plumb line of truth in His Word and will hold us accountable for any deviation from the center. Just as the carpenter dares not miss his exact vertical when erecting a wall, DMCS will not veer from our mission:
Equipping students with an excellent Biblically-directed, Christ-centered education. | |

In Her Own Words by Molly Stouffer Flinkman, Class of '04

noun: an entertainment or social event to raise funds for a person or cause
verb: to be useful or profitable to
We went to the noun kind of benefit at my high school alma mater: Des Moines Christian School. ...The Development Director called and asked me if I would be willing to recruit some fellow '04 graduates to fill up a table... Sounded like an excuse for a good time, so I happily agreed.
There were ten of us total: Five graduates and five significant others, although to the naked eye, I'm not sure you could tell the difference between the two.
The last time I went to a DMCS benefit I was in high school, so between refilling glasses of iced tea and singing on stage with the show choir, I never actually sat through an entire program. I'm happy to say that I now have.
It chokes my throat all up to be in a place where God is clearly at the forefront. A place where first graders proudly recite Romans. A place where an eleventh grader speaks honestly about how her life is being shaped by her faith. A place where Tom Sawyer takes Christian overtones, staff members speak about convictions, and premiere parking spots auction off for $4200...
What a useful and profitable experience I had in high school... I am convinced that I am a more well-rounded thinker because of the way my worldview was shaped in high school. It's profitable in a way that has nothing to do with money. My life has been benefited by the people who continue to influence my life even today...God has chosen to bless me with really great friends in every season of life and for that, I will forever be thankful.

| L-R: Coach Fynaardt, Chris Sturdivant, Sean Glenn, Ryan Minor, Cody Carlson, Andrew Minor |
With no course to call home, the Lions golfers still wrapped up outstanding seasons!
The boys achieved a 58-5 record and a 4th place finish at the State Tournament. Season highlights include winning the Lake Panorama Invitational and the Conference Tournament, placing five golfers on All Conference Teams, and finishing our District Tournament in pouring rain to qualify for State. The boys' 9 hole scoring average of 170.8 placed them in the Class 2A Top 10. With only two seniors Colin Frye and alternate Zack Godwin, graduating, the team composed of sophomore Chris Sturdivant, junior Andrew Minor, freshman Ryan Minor, junior Cody Carlson, and junior Sean Glenn, are aiming for another great season in 2012.
Chris Sturdivant led individual accomplishments with a 9-hole average of 40.5. Sturdivant medaled in every meet, placed 5th of 63 golfers at the State Tournament, and was selected 2nd team All State. Andrew Minor, who averaged 41.6 for the season, qualified to compete as an individual at State.
The Lion Girls earned the Conference Championship with a 20-6 record, led by senior and 3-time All Conference player Britt Schoon. Schoon finished with a 9 hole average of 45.7 and was selected 1st Team All Conference, 2nd Team All-State in Class 2A, and an individual qualifier for the Sectional Tournament.
Sophomore Katie Barbee qualified as an individual to play in the Sectional tournament with a 9-hole average of 45.2. In her first year playing with the Lions, Barbee was nominated for 1st Team All Conference member and 1st team All- State in Class 2A. |

Tom and Huck Were a Hit
by Ashley Skinner, Drama Director

| L-R: Noah Nichols ('12) and Ian Troll ('14) star as Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer |
On April 7-9, 2011, one of America's favorite books came to musical life at Des Moines Christian School. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer the Musical is the beloved tale of a fourteen-year-old boy growing up in a Mississippi River town during the mid-1800s.
The phenomenal musical and theatre talent of DMCS students and the servant's heart of our parents and teachers was evident whether they were onstage acting, shifting the set, or applying make-up. Forty junior high and high school students used their God-given gifts to bless a total audience of over 700 people. Musical Director Sarah Selby conducted a live band (complete with banjo!) in almost nonstop accompaniment. Assistant director, former DMCS English teacher Emily Kothmann used her fantastic eye for characterization to help actors with their onstage presence. Parents donated props, built rocks, bought meals, took down the set, and repeated the wonderful words, "What can I do?" It's no wonder DMCS produces quality productions with such dedicated students, parents, and teachers! If you missed the show, next year's play is in April of 2012. See you there! |
DMCS Students Minister in Dominican Republic
| Cody Carlson ('13) shares the love of Christ with local students |
Fifteen students and four adults embarked on a spring break mission trip arranged by the Association of Christian Schools International to connect DMCS with an ACSI International sister school in the Dominican Republic. The mission team ministered through Vacation Bible School, English lessons, drama, activities, and work projects.
Prior to the team's arrival, the Dominican school had requested that Bible verses be painted on the school walls. DMCS students with no experience in teaching, prepared well-written English lessons, VBS, and dramas, incorporating the requested verses.
Through their interactions, DMCS students established loving relationships with the Dominican children. Two children who accepted Christ through VBS went out and brought back 3 of their friends who also accepted Jesus!
The Dominican school had been in desperate need of a play area; students were playing in the street or in tiny classrooms; however, the school had no funding for the project. The DMCS mission team raised $6,000 above their travel needs - within dollars of the final bid.
After constructing a playground on the school roof (they carried cement blocks, sand, and mortar up ladders from ground level to the 3rd story roof!), the DMCS team presented a musical drama for the Dominican students on their new rooftop playground. What a celebration of transformation! Small drab classrooms came to life with colorfully painted scripture, a bare roof was turned into a safe playground, and - Praise God! - souls were transformed from death to life! Finally, 15 DMCS students' high school curriculum transformed into a life-changing experience as they were used by God to change a little part of the world. |

DMCS Alumni Receives Gubernatorial Appointment
Congratulations to 1996 DMCS graduate Eric Goranson for his appointment by Governor Branstad (approved 47-0 by the Iowa Senate) to the State Board of Education. Eric represents DMCS and other Christian schools in Iowa through his work for the Iowa Association of Christian Schools, as Chair of the Iowa Advocates for Choice in Education, and as President of the Education Opportunities PAC. Thank you to Governor Branstad for appointing a person who will represent non-public schools on the State Board. |
