Rating Your Workout
What is Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE)?

Rate of Perceived Exertion is a way of measuring your physical activity intensity level.  Ask yourself the following questions:

1. Can you talk?

2. Can you sing?

3. How is your breathing?

4. Are you sweating?

If you answered:
Yes, Yes, Regular and No - then your intensity level is Low

If you answered:
Yes, No, Often and deep, and Yes after about 10 minutes - then your intensity level is Moderate

If you answered:
Briefly, No, Rapid and Deep, and Yes after about 5 minutes - then your intensity level is High

Keeping Your Treadmill Workouts Beneficial AND Interesting!

The treadmill continues to be the most predominantly used piece of fitness equipment by individuals as a means to improve fitness levels and reduce waist lines.  During Michigan Winters, more consumers purchase treadmills for their homes for these purposes than any other piece of equipment.  And, by Groundhog's Day, too many people have lost their motivation and, consequently, they don't use their treadmill effectively, if at all.  The primary reasons - boredom and immeasurable results!  Below, American Home Fitness has listed three easy, effective and challenging (read "interesting") treadmill workouts that will keep you on track with your fitness goals and keep you motivated to keep coming back for more!  And, with good motivation and good equipment, your ultimate achievements will be well within your reach!

The workouts suggested below are listed in order of least challenging to most challenging and always consult your physician before beginning any new exercise or fitness program.

Fat Burning  Workout

This is a great workout for the beginner to start with, as it familiarizes him or her with the function of the treadmill and its heart rate features and does NOT over tax the body's joints and lung capacity, all while efficiently burning fat for fuel. Using a heart rate measuring treadmill (almost all treadmills at American Home Fitness have some heart rate measuring feature), engage either the Quick Start or Manual Program and set the treadmill at a speed that gradually elevates your heart rate to 60% of your age-predicted maximum heart rate (calculated as 220 - age x 60%).  Once achieved, hold this level of intensity for 35 minutes, adjusting the speed or incline level of the treadmill to keep your heart rate within the 60% zone.  After 35 minutes, cool down with a slow walk with the incline set at zero.  Keeping the exercise intensity at a low rate for 30 to 60 minutes will naturally utilize more fat burning resources for fuel.  At the outset, the new user should incorporate this Fat Burning workout 3 to 5 times a week for the first month of their new program, increasing intensity only as dictated by improvements in condition and as measured by heart rate read outs during the workout.

Interval Workout

Now that you have become comfortable with your treadmill and begun the shaping up process, we can now turn to a slightly more challenging workout -the Interval Workout.  As the name suggests, this program functions in timed "intervals" of stronger effort and active rest.  After a five minute warm up, increase either the speed or incline to a level in which your Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) is at a level 7 on a scale of 1-10 and hold that level for 1 minute.  After one minute, reduce the speed and incline down to a point where your RPE is at a level 3 and hold for 2 minutes.  Repeat this pattern six more times and complete the workout with a 5 minute cool down.  While the percentage of fat calories used to fuel this workout will not be as high as in the Fat Burning Workout above, the efforts made during the "Work" interval will help you burn significantly more calories throughout this workout, making this a very time efficient and effective tool in your workout arsenal.  All treadmills at American Home Fitness have some type of pre-set interval workout program on their console, which will help you get started on this intermediate program.   This program should be utilized as an alternative to the Fat Burning Workout and done no more than twice per week and never on consecutive days.

Hill Sculpting Workout

By interchanging the Fat Burning and Interval Workout programs 3 to 5 days a week, along with a portioned controlled eating regimen, you are probably starting to see some weight loss and improvement in your endurance.  With those accomplishments in place (and congratulations to you!), the Hill Sculpting Workout will compliment these achievements by utilizing the incline feature on your treadmill to strengthen and sculpt your legs and glute muscles.  After your gradual 3 to 5 minute warm up, set the treadmill speed at a comfortable (NOT aggressive) walking speed and increase its incline to 10%.  If necessary, reduce your speed to a rate by which you can manage this incline level.  The critical variable of this workout is the incline, more so than the speed of your workout.  Once the incline is set, keep this workout interesting by integrating intervals, by which you hold the incline for 4 minutes, reduce it down to 0% incline for 2 minutes and then repeat this pattern for 3 more sets, finishing the workout with a 5 minute walking cool down.  If you are wearing your heart rate monitoring device, your heart rate should elevate to 75% of its maximum during the incline phase and reduce back down to 50 to 60% during the active rest phase.  Science has shown that utilizing your treadmill's incline feature in this way will activate more than 3 times the amount of muscle tissue in the lower body than steady running on a flat surface.  And you know what that can mean:  BETTER LOOKING LEGS AND BACK SIDE!

We at American Home Fitness focus on creating positive, life-changing results for our customers.  Too often, we are approached by people that have had a less than satisfying experience with home fitness equipment, many times with a treadmill.  Often times, the problem lies as much with a lack of direction or understanding of how to use the equipment as it does with the quality of the fitness equipment purchased.  While American Home Fitness does pride ourselves on providing the best and most complete lineup of fitness equipment in Michigan, we also value our ability to provide exercise guidance and suggestions so that our customers get the results they are seeking from their purchase.  If you ever have a question regarding fitness or are looking for guidance or motivation, stop in and see us.  We'd love to help you get focused, re-energized and back on track to a healthy and rewarding lifestyle

Elliptical Trainer

"How To Sort The Madness"

Elliptical trainers continue to be one of the fastest growing product categories in the fitness world.  As the Baby Boomer Generation continues to age, more and more people are enjoying training on the low-impact elliptical trainers as a cardiovascular exercise alternative to treadmills. With so many brands of ellipticals out there, one question remains: Which Elliptical is right for me???

There are a few factors to consider when shopping for the elliptical trainer that's just right for you:

  • Fitness Goals

First and foremost, you need to find an elliptical that will help you achieve your fitness goals.  If it doesn't, then your ultimate success will be tough to achieve.

    1. Is your goal weight loss?  If so, let's look for an elliptical with weight loss and interval training programs to help efficiently burn fat for fuel.
    2. Will this elliptical be a compliment to your running program?  If so, look for an elliptical that does NOT mimic your running stride.  A Precor elliptical, with an adjustable ramp, will work your heart and lungs while incorporating a stride that is different that your running stride, helping to develop other leg muscles that support your running and prevent overuse injuries.
    3. Will this elliptical be used to replace running?  If so, then let's look at an elliptical with narrow pedal spacing and a shallow (not high) ellipse pattern. An Octane elliptical, with its narrow pedal spacing and easy step up height may be a wise choice.
    4. How frequently will you use the elliptical?  If you are training for a marathon - it wouldn't be wise looking at a $399 special because you will be disappointment when the machine can't handle the stress of the training schedule of a long distant runner.  We should try to match our fitness goals with machines which will help us achieve our goals

  • Feel /comfort

The most distinguishing, and perhaps most important, feature to consider when purchasing elliptical is the feel of the pedal stroke.  It MUST feel smooth and comfortable.  If it does, you will stay on the machine longer and reap the benefits you are after. The elliptical trainer should keep you in a neutral position while you are exercising. When trying out machines test out the elliptical going forward and reverse.  A unique fitness benefit of an elliptical over, say a recumbent bike or treadmill, is the fact that you can push the pedals both forward and in reverse, and, in doing so, work your legs in different ways.

  • Space

You need to identify where to position the elliptical in the house. The location will significantly influence your use of the elliptical. If you position the machine in a room with comfortable surroundings, such as a finished room in your basement or spare bedroom, fitness will become a destination for you, a place you look forward to visiting and getting benefit from.

  • Support

A faceless internet company often promises the world, but rarely delivers. Find a local company which specializes in fitness. The benefits are many:

    1. You can try out the different elliptical machines in factory fresh working condition;
    2. You will receive expert advice from staff which cares about getting results for you;
    3. The level of service for your machine will be personal and attentive;
    4. You'll be supporting businesses in your community.

  • Cost

As is the case when making any significant purchase for the home, family budgets and finances have to be considered.  And, just as is the case with most purchases, when buying fitness equipment you get what you pay for!  However, the purchase of fitness equipment yields benefits way beyond the purchase of, say, a piece of furniture.  You are making a long-term investment in the health and wellness of you and your family which will provide a benefit that can last a lifetime.  Don't underestimate this, as it reaches beyond the cost of equipment to a better life, less illness, lower insurance premiums, and better work productivity.  As you can see, the benefits are almost endless.  And when shopping for quality equipment, ask your fitness retailer about financing programs which may provide additional purchasing options for your dream elliptical!

Customer Success Story

Dean Horiski, Store Manager of our Sterling Heights location, recently had a customer interested in purchasing a new piece of equipment.  After spending time talking with her, Dean recommended the XR4, Octane's seated elliptical.  This machine would give her the workout she desired and be comfortable while working towards her goals.  After a couple of weeks using her new elliptical, Dean received the following email.

Hello, Dean!

First off, I want to thank you for everything you've done for me! Somehow you have been able to take an extremely frustrating situation and turn it into a positive and hopeful one.  I have known for years that I need some sort of activity in my life and pain has simply kept me from doing it let alone the emotional toll it has taken as well.  I was diagnosed with MS about 11 years ago and it took me awhile, but through nutrition and supplements I am finally symptom free and on the road towards health.  The lingering factor is my pain, mostly in my hip and the fatigue which prevents me from simply hopping on a treadmill and "working through it".

My seated elliptical, which until recently I didn't even know existed, has given me something to look forward to.  Gosh, I never thought I'd say that I look forward to going downstairs and doing my program!  I thought the days of my past "bad-ass softball playin attitude" that I once had were gone.  I may never again join a team, but to feel like I can again be physically active and maybe even fit, toned, and healthy with some much missed stamina starts here and now with your machine.

Thank you for your laid back, non-judgmental attitude which I have run into with too many other people to even mention.  I truly feel as if you are my trainer and I feel comfortable to actually call you should I ever have any questions or concerns.  You made me feel heard and supported and I really appreciate you for that.

The guys that came to install my machine the very next day were great- really liked them- thanks for that.  Thanks for the time that you put into my little program you designed for me.  I have done it faithfully ever since and have kept track of all of the vitals right on the paper I printed out.  I will keep you posted to my progress.

Again with a heartfelt thanks and renewed sense of hope, I look forward to continuing to work with you.
Be well-
Kimberly
