I Got Friends In Low Places

Greetings!

A few years back Garth Brooks topped the country charts with, I Got Friends In Low Places.  A few years before that (Like 3000 years or so) another musician might have been his inspiration.  A guy from a small town in the country of Bethlehem named David was all the rage on the music scene.  And his friends, well let's take a look.

"Everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him; and he became captain over them. Now there were about four hundred men with him."
1 Samuel 22:2NASB

David had some friends in low places.  The amazing thing is that at the end of David's career there is a list of who's who.  The text refers to these guys as, "These are the mighty men whom David had..."  2 Samuel 23:8ff NASB

Where did these guys come from?  Well, the logical choice is that these were the guys that David shaped, molded, trained, mentored and released to do the Lord's battles.  These men who came from low places:

1.  In Distress
2.  In Debt
3.  And Discontented

They became, "Mighty Men".  Who is around you?  So many leadership books that I read talk about hand picking the cream of the crop.  They advise finding top leaders who have potential rather than looking for potential leaders.  I'm glad that David did not go with conventional wisdom.  He took the dregs of society and converted them into "Mighty Men".

In the New Testament, Paul also points out some friends in low places when he writes,

"Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many wereinfluential; not many were of noble birth." 1 Corinthians 1:26 NIV

God transforms the world through ordinary women and ordinary men like you and me, from low places.
