Invest in Your Child's Future Self-worth!

Nothing pushes us closer to tears, at A New Leaf's Development Office, faster than a child's visit to drop off donations for the homeless children living in our shelters.

The encouragement given by the conscientious parents of these little "philanthropists in the making," is admirable. It reflects their understanding of the wisdom in Winston Churchill's words when he said, "We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give." It confirms that these insightful parents recognize the value that giving has in the growth of their children's future feelings of self-worth.

When we consider the most effective tool we parents have for teaching our children how to give, it's obvious...by example. Our kids are consistently watching us and evaluating who we are and what we do. It's our job to explain the why and equip them with the how. Who do your children emulate?

Below are a few great examples for you and your children to begin your joint journey in giving to the less fortunate:

  • Together with your child, choose a charity that helps your community. Call the charity to set up a visit/tour so you and your child can get a real sense of the needs of the  charity and how the charity helps others.
  • Make a list of the types of donations the charity will need. Remind your child that it isn't just about donating money. Charities can use donations of time and newly purchased supplies.
  • Encourage your child to donate a small percentage of their allowance. Set aside a special place for any money your child donates. Make sure they see you contribute to the donation jar as well.
  • At the beginning of each month, have your child decide what they will donate - time, money, new supplies, or a combination.
  • Praise your child for a job well-done and encourage them tocontinue the next month.
  • Enjoy a moment, recognizing that you are contributing to a more successful future for your child.
We commend you parents for you commitment to raising caring, open hearted children and for your commitment in helping the children and families we serve at A New Leaf.
