A Message from Chamber President Kevin Herrell
The last couple of years have been quite interesting, to say the least, when it comes to running a successful business. Although every aspect of your operation should be objectively considered, whether it is personnel, sales processes, production methods, etc. this is not always carried out with diligence in a booming economy. Even with a stable economy we tend to shy away from the difficult conversations that need to take place in order to be profitable long term. However, fortunately for us, we have had the opportunity to experience pain! (I understand this sounds crazy but stay with me.) Consider the silver lining for a moment. When we find ourselves in such an economic environment we tend to become very clear on what's really important and what ultimately drives the success of our businesses.
Think back over the last two years. With all the ups and downs how has your business or organization adapted to the new economy? How have you developed your people to meet their full potential to provide the products and services you offer in the best possible manner? How have you changed processes to remain competitive? How easy are you to do business with? I would imagine the majority of folks out there could say they are running a leaner more customer-centered operation than ever before.
As Obion County Chamber president I have had the privilege of being surrounded by people who have a passion for the continued success of our community and surrounding region. A few of these folks work for the Chamber and are dedicated to our philosophy that we exist to Promote, Preserve and Protect our member businesses and organizations. The others include city and county officials, utility representatives and a host of business leaders who are all dedicated to making our area a great place to live and work. We have experienced the same type of organizational "shock therapy" as any other business and are better for it. In other words we are focused more than ever on helping you, our members, become even better.
The announcement Goodyear made earlier this month is a constant on everyone's mind. We are especially sensitive to the fact that no one is more affected by this than the employees and their families. They are in our thoughts and prayers. We are also aware that our members again have to adapt to a "new economy". We are dedicated to helping you achieve this task.
At the Obion County Chamber of Commerce we continue to provide resources that are designed to strengthen your businesses and organizations such as Business Matters, which is held on the third Tuesday of every month. The topics include anything from tax preparation to IT security and are designed to help you walk away with ideas to implement immediately. This is also a great networking opportunity. Another place to network is at Business After Hours that provides a relaxed setting for our members to discuss current topics of interest. We also partner with several organizations such as the state of Tennessee, the REED Center, and the Business Enterprise Resource office, and the Northwest Tennessee Workforce Board, that can help with expansion and growth of your business or organization. Activity is continually taking place behind the scenes with regards to governmental and legislative initiatives as well as the promotion of tourism to help bring new business to your doors.
We appreciate the support of our members and look forward to working with you in making Obion County a great place to continue to live and work. We are here to help you stay focused on your priorities by shaping a successful business climate.

National Issues Forum on "Economic Security"
The Ken Tenn Regional Alliance will be hosting a National Issues Forum on "Economic Security." The public forum will be led by Alison Davis, PhD Executive Director of the Community and Economic Development Initiative of Kentucky at the University of Kentucky and Michael Wilcox, PhD, assistant professor of agricultural economics at the University of Tennessee. The forum will be held of March 14th at 1pm at the Pontotoc Community Center in Fulton, Kentucky.
The National Issues Forums Institute is a 26-year-old nonpartisan, nationwide network of locally sponsored forums for the consideration of public policy issues. Forums are rooted in the simple notion that citizens need to come together to reason and talk - to deliberate about common problems. For more information about the National Issues Forums Institute visit www.nifi.org.
As the nation slowly recovers from its worst recession in decades, it is a good time to ask how we can best take charge of the future, so families can feel reasonably secure, parents can help their children prosper, and everyone can move toward a financially stable retirement.
The forum is presented free of charge and open to the public. However, space is limited; therefore, participation is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
For more information or to make reservations, call the Fulton County Extension office at (270) 236-2351 or email kytnnif@gmail.com.
