Business Matters

Once again, Business Matters has made an awesome impact on our Chamber members.  If you missed it, May's special guest speaker was Sharon Taylor-McKinney with BERO, that's Business Enterprise Resource Office.  BERO collaborates with other state agencies and small business support programs to:

  • Provide information about grants and loans
  • Direct entrepreneurs to partnerships with government and private entities.
  • Offer one-on-one technical assistance.
  • Host financial and procurement workshops and conferences.
  • Help with small business expansion, relocation and turnaround situations.
  • Not only did our guest learn how BERO could help with startup businesses, but Sharon was a wealth of information for existing businesses too.  The best part about it, all the services that BERO offer is absolutely free!
The networking activity involved attendees pairing up and sharing one of their business' specialties with each other.  They were then asked to stand up and share one thing that their business offered that not everybody might be aware of.  Everyone, including me, was shocked and amazed at what we found out about businesses right in our own backyard!

June's Business Matters event featured Jason Kizer with Kizer Pharmacy.  Jason discussed prescription benefits for both individuals and businesses along with money saving tips and information.  Attendee Mimi DuBois with Hamilton-Ryker said, "Thank you so much for the informative breakfast this morning!  I learned so much about prescription benefits today and I plan on using that information to help my company keep up to date on pharmacy benefits to help lower costs."

Please join us for the next one on July 20th  at 7:45am at the Obion County Public Library.  Next month's speaker will be announced at a later date.  We will see you then!  Hamilton-Ryker Company of Union City sponsors the 2010 monthly "Business Matters" events.  "Business Matters" is held on the third Tuesday of each month.  To register or for more information, please contact Robbie Green at (731) 885-0211 or rgreen@obioncounty.org.

Discovery Park
Public Unveiling Tuesday, June 22, at 9:30am at Everett Stewart Regional Airport

Discovery park LogoAs you well know, Discovery Park has been delayed due to the change in architects.  However, considerable work has been done since January when a new architectural team was selected.  We have a new and very interesting design for the flagship building, Discovery Center, as well as an exciting layout for the 50-acre site.  Planning for exhibits is also well underway and several interesting artifacts have been purchased for display.

Some of these artifacts will be on display at the event and one will be flying into the airport!  The Stearman PT-17 is a historic airplane that was used to train thousands of pilots in WWII including many at what is currently Everett Stewart Airport.  The Stearman will be on display in Discovery Center but on Tuesday, Mike Rinker will fly it around the airport before landing for an up-close look.

The public is welcome at this event so please invite any of your friends or family to attend.

Detailed Update at 2:00 pm at OC Library...
At 2:00 pm, the architects will present more details about the building design and layout, the site plan and plans for the exhibit.  This is an excellent opportunity to get the latest information about the current status and plans for Discovery Park's site, building and exhibits. This meeting will take place at the Obion County Library and will last approximately 1 hour.

We're delighted that the work is progressing well and the vision for an extraordinary educational and entertainment venue will be fulfilled by the end of 2012.

Come join us for these two events and get a new sense of excitement and anticipation for Discovery Park.

Runway Extension

Airport Runway Extension Groundbreaking April 2010

On April 30th, Obion County and Weakley County officials, as well as State and Federal officials, performed a traditional ground-breaking ceremony at Everett-Stewart Regional Airport.  Work has begun on the project which includes extending the 5,000-foot runway and taxiway by 1,500 feet, additional lighting, and the relocation of the ODALS and the ILS glidslope antenna.  Tennessee Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely, Tennessee Aeronautics Commission Chairman Ron Cooper, Aeronautics Director Bob Woods, FAA Memphis Airports District Office Manager Phillip Braden and former Aeronautics Chairman Jim Ethridge, were among those attending the event. Commissioner Nicely said the $4.9 million project, when finished, will make the airport one of the major general aviation airports in the state. "It's clearly an investment of tremendous benefit to Obion County and Weakley County and northwest Tennessee," he said. The target date for completion of construction is Oct. 31. The 1,500-feet addition to the runway at Everett-Stewart Regional Airport will make it one of the longest runways of general aviation airports and place it among world-class regional airports. The airport is overseen by a board comprised of Obion and Weakley County officials:  Shawn Francisco, Wayne McCreight, Jimmy Westbrook, Perry Barfield, Mike Holman, David James and Chris Gooch, Chairman.
How to survive after an emergency
http://www.ready.gov/america/getakit/index.html

Ready AmericaYou may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water, and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least three days. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours, or it might take days. In addition, basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment, and telephones may be cut off for days, or even a week or longer.

Recommended Items to Include in a Basic Emergency Supply Kit:

· Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
· Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
· Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
· Flashlight and extra batteries
· First aid kit
· Whistle to signal for help
· Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
· Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
· Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
· Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
· Local maps
· Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger

· Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper - When diluted nine parts water to one part bleach, bleach can be used as a disinfectant. Or in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.
· Fire Extinguisher
· Matches in a waterproof container
· Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
· Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels
