CONSERVATION vs. EFFICIENCY Before getting all caught up in participating in all the Conservation and Efficiency programs that are available, let's go over some definitions that may help you decide which programs you should participate in and which you should not. Two terms that are often used interchangeably, but are more appropriately "different ends of the same stick," are Conservation and Efficiency. CONSERVATION is any behavior that results in a reduction of use or consumption. Conservation is a human concern. It involves a reduction, restriction or sacrifice of something. EFFICIENCY is the use of less of something (water, electricity, etc.,) usually by some kind of device, to perform an activity or process.Once this device is applied or installed, it requires no additional effort. Efficiency is a technological concern.
To illustrate this, let's look at the 20 year old, SEER 10 (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) all electric HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system in your grandparents' home. Today the thermostat is set on 80 degrees. If you turn the thermostat on this old unit up to 85 degrees, you are conserving energy. You are sacrificing comfort to save energy. If this old unit is replaced with a new SEER 16 unit, the new unit is energy efficient. It is technology that uses less electricity (than the SEER 10 HVAC) to maintain a temperature of 80 degrees. And this brings us to another term: EFFECTIVENESS. Before making a decision to sacrifice comfort or invest in energy efficient technology, you need to decide what your real goal is. If your goal is to save money for a winter vacation, spending thousands of dollars to save $75 per month on your utility bill may not get you very far. And, if your primary goal is to stay cool, raising the temperature by 5 degrees is not going to help you accomplish this. But, if you are trying to save money in the long run, decrease the use of electricity or fossil fuels or reduce your carbon foot print, you are right on target with either or both of these options. |
