Dear Friend of Claremont Heritage,

May is National Preservation Month and this year's National theme is "Discover America's Hidden Gems." Communities from coast to coast are filled with unexplored historic treasures-and May's the month to celebrate them!

Claremont is no exception and Claremont Heritage invites you to be part of the celebration!

Claremont Heritage also has our own theme for 2012, as we do every year, and this year it is "Neighbors and Neighborhoods".

As Claremonters we all recognize we live in a special place. Certain aspects of Claremont's charm are obvious: a quaint college town nestled at the foot of Mt. Baldy with an old fashioned downtown and an extensive historic residential district. But the essence of Claremont is in the details: minute, sensory details - some personal, some universal. These are the things that give Claremont its unique flavor and they, too, are worth preserving.

We at Claremont Heritage invite you to join us this year at one of our events, and if you're not already a member, consider becoming one!

You CAN make a difference in our community!

Sincerely,

David Shearer

Historic Mural Finds a New Home

Claremont Heritage is proud to announce that a significant piece of Claremont's history has found a new home!

"The History of Pharmacy" a 45 foot by 8 foot mural painted by Paul Coates and Diane Divelbess in 1960/61 was installed in Hendricks Pharmacy and was rescued by Claremont Heritage when Walter's Restaurant expanded in the late 1970's.

The mural has been in storage for over two decades and was just recently displayed at Claremont Heritage's Ginger Elliott Exhibition Center in the exhibition "Art in Public Spaces: 1945 - 1975" one of a collaborative series of exhibitions undertaken by Claremont Heritage and the Claremont Museum of Art as part of the Pacific Standard Time initiative organized by the Getty.

Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences (KGI) has taken the mural on loan to be displayed in the new Chapman KGI School of BioPharmacy wing that will be open to the public for viewing.

Claremont Heritage wants to thank KGI for its conservation and presentation of an important piece of Claremont history.
