PHYSICIAN PERSPECTIVE
| | Joe Kim, MD Director, Hospitalist Program Leads Family Centered Rounding for the Blue Team
"The focus of family centered rounds is to have the people who best know the child contribute to the medical decision process. This necessitates the bedside presence of the parents, the nurse, and the medical team to collectively decide what is in the best interest of the child. Thus far, the response from parents has been terrific."

Bill Rhine, MD
Director of the NICU, has included families in rounds for the past year
"After years of trying to convince the NICU medical and nursing staff about the benefits of including parents on rounds, we were finally able to implement this practice with the help and input of our parent leaders, especially Heather Keller, as well as with the support of Karen Wayman from Family-Centered Care. Since its implementation, our parents have been more satisfied than ever with their understanding of, and inclusion in, their babies' care."

| PARENT PERSPECTIVE ON ROUNDS | | | Michele Ashland,
Parent Mentor
"When I meet with a family to prepare them for participating in rounds, I find them very receptive. Using the interpreter, a Spanish-speaking mom told me, 'It is so good that they involve us. We can understand what they are doing, why they are doing it, and how we can better care for our child.'"

FAMILY CENTERED ROUNDS | Nov/Dec 2010 |
|
Blue Team Begins Family Centered Rounds On 3 North and 3 East | A hospital-wide initiative to implement Family Centered Rounds is gaining momentum. Currently, parents are included on rounds in the NICU, PICU, and CVICU. In August, the the Blue Team started Family Centered Rounds and offer the option of participation to parents on 3N and 3E. Families are given the choice whether they'd like to participate in their child's medical rounds, with about 90% of parents opting in. Blue Team rounds are multidisciplinary, including nursing as well as social work, case management, pharmacy, and nutrition when possible. Interpreters are present for Spanish speaking parents. The medical status, resident teaching, and plan for the day are all conducted in the presence of the parent and sometimes the patient---representing a shift from the traditional practice of rounding outside of the patient's room to develop the plan prior to meeting with the family. Research studies have shown that Family Centered Rounds significantly improves family satisfaction, doesn't increase the time of rounds, and provides Residents with improved learning opportunities for communicating with patients and families. Learn more about national research on Family Centered Rounds. This successful initiative is the result of the work of a multidisciplinary team led by Joe Kim, MD, Susan Herman, RN and Erin Vera. |
| Bedside Nurses Critical to the Success of Family Centered Rounds

Implementation of Family Centered Care Rounds on 3N & 3E has provided an opportunity for bedside nurses to participate as partners in medical rounds. In a survey, 96% of nurses report that attending rounds increases their knowledge of the patient's plan of care, and 79% say they call residents less often to coordinate care."Family Centered Rounds puts the nurse back at the center of the patient's care, acting as the advocate and voice of the patient and family, while also acting as a liaison to the physicians." Stephanie Wintch, RN Nurse Educator
