The IEEE SoutheastCon 2010 conference was held March 18-20 at the Concord Convention Center.  The event had nearly 900 attendees and featured over 100 technical presentations.  Neoventus was one of the exhibitors and was treated to a healthy mix of professional, student, and exhibitor visitors.  With a theme of "Energizing Our Future," the event attracted many exhibitors from the power industry including AREVA, Duke Energy, EPRI, Fluor Power Group, Pike Electric, and others.  Meeting future energy demands will not only rely on conservation and alternative energy sources, but also on improved efficiency through the advent of the smart grid. The smart grid will consist of broadly distributed sensors and control units, an area Neoventus is posed to play a prominent, although "behind the scenes", roll.  Leveraging decades of embedded system development experience, Neoventus is providing design and support to OEMs and service providers - creating the means to manage their system as an efficient integrated whole.



 Microchip, Texas Instruments, Cypress and Renesas all play a role in the embedded systems and smart sensors market and will undoubtedly be an integral part of future smart grid technology. All were present and with nearly 500 students in attendance each had an opportunity to touch the future of the embedded systems community with literature, discussions, and hands-on demonstrations. Students weren't the only target, however. If an evaluation kit could find its way into the curriculum of any of the schools in attendance, future design wins are sure to follow.

For the students, one of the bigger highlights of the conference was the hardware competition. In the spirit of renewable energy, the focus of the competition was on the use of green energy in autonomous vehicles. No batteries or fuel was allowed as a source of energy; only light from lamps placed atop the track on which the vehicle had to maneuver.  Each lamp represented a fueling station. Solar panels affixed to the top of the vehicle collected energy, but the lack of conventional "chemical" storage (in the form of batteries) was a major challenge confronted by the teams. Points were awarded on the vehicle's ability to complete laps and navigate obstacles.  Congratulations go out to the team from Western Kentucky University for their first place showing in the competition. Not placing in the competition, but very worthy of mention, is the team from Western Carolina University whose approach was quite clever. Their approach was to construct two vehicles tethered by a power cable. One vehicle sat under a lamp powering the other on its trip from one light fueling station to the next. The pair leapfrogged each other along the course.

I hope you have been able to enjoy some of the beautiful spring weather we've been treated to lately.  After a long snowy winter in Charlottesville, I was certainly ready for some outdoor activities and was able to squeeze in a round of golf while attending IEEE's SoutheastCon 2010 event in Charlotte, NC.  My game had its usual spring rust, but it was a great start to an event that featured nearly 900 professionals, students and exhibitors. 
 
In this issue of in-ventus, I'll highlight a USB I/O board we've developed for Ferguson Beauregard, a leader in plunger lift technology serving the oil and gas industry.  I'll also recap some of the SoutheastCon 2010 conference highlights (none of which are related to my golf game) and share an article written by Dee Power on the pros and cons of outsourcing. Ms. Power concludes that the advantages of outsourcing are "well worth the decision to do so", but the practice is not without its risks. Neoventus mitigates these risks by drawing on decades of product development experience and working in close collaboration with our clients - constant communication is key.

Flexible USB IO Module for Use in Oil and Gas Industries
 
Neoventus has completed the design of a configurable IO module for use in Ferguson Beauregard's iSyte system. FB_USB_IOThis module, based on STMicroelectronics latest family of 32-bit ARM microcontrollers - the STM32, implements a wide variety of IO types and interfaces to the iSyte controller over USB. In addition, each input point is reconfigurable via software allowing for easy module reuse as new applications or sensor / actuator types are required.

Neoventus provided all hardware and firmware design, followed by testing with Microsoft Windows® USB (HID) driver to assure the expected functionality. Neoventus structures contracts to the needs of each client - in this case we worked to transition the design to Ferguson Beauregard's manufacturer for prototyping and production following design. As in nearly every case, full functionality was achieved on the first pass hardware.

The iSytesystem simultaneously optimizes and controls production of multiple gas wells; and does so wirelessly. The configurable wired IO provides additional facility status visibility to operators, and facilitates customer specific control algorithms.

Outsourcing: The Advantages and Disadvantages of Outsourcing
Outsourcing occurs when a business secures (purchases) products and/or services from a third party, as opposed to producing them in-house. There are several advantages and disadvantages to outsourcing.

Advantages of Outsourcing

One of the biggest advantages can be lower personnel costs. By outsourcing job duties to non-employees, a business does not have to pay consistent wages or offer additional employee benefits. The company may pay lower taxes because independent contractors, the people who complete the outsourced projects, pay their own withholding, social security, and other taxes. This can add up to substantial savings.

Some businesses choose to take their outsourcing one step further by choosing a vendor, located in another part of the world. Doing so typically saves them more money because they end up paying a much lower wage than would be necessary in their home country. The disadvantage is that these vendors may not understand English and communication is more difficult.

Many times, outsourcing speeds up production time. Since the third-party vendor will only be concentrating on one specific task, instead of numerous office duties, actual production time can be greatly increased.

Outsourcing gives a business the flexibility to change third-party vendors whenever necessary. This process is not as time-consuming as the normal employee hiring process, because they are not screening individuals, they are considering established companies with proven track records.

An excellent example of this is customer service. When a business outsources its customer service department, it does not have to hire and oversee thirty individual operators. Instead, it can hire one call center, which will perform all needed tasks.

Recent studies show that information technology-related tasks are outsourced more than anything else. Other common department functions that are outsourced include: human relations, training, accounting and supply management.

Whether a business chooses to outsource on a temporary basis or permanently, the advantages are well worth the decision to do so. Most businesses, which set out to outsource temporarily end up making an ongoing commitment.

Disadvantages of Outsourcing

One of the biggest disadvantages of outsourcing is undesirable results. This is especially true when a company hires a third-party vendor to mass produce a product. In the event that the finished products do not meet quality standards, the manufacturing process must be repeated by a different vendor.

Not only is this a waste of time and materials, it can also be very costly for the company who outsourced the project. They are essentially paying twice for the same job. In addition there is always the possibility that the company may lose sales, during this same period because of the lack of available product.

Another disadvantage of outsourcing is a loss of jobs. Many times work is outsourced simply as a means to save money. Outsourcing to a foreign country typically saves a company a great deal in wages. So, the choice is made to reduce their local workforce, at the expense of the laid-off employees.

In turn, it can cause community uproar and even a decrease in business and profits. This happens when local consumers make the decision to shop elsewhere, as a way to voice their disdain.

Outsourcing customer service jobs, to foreign countries, is on the rise. Many large corporations including credit card companies, shopping networks and computer manufacturers are making this change.

The problem with this is a lack of communication. It can be very frustrating for a consumer who is calling in with a customer service issue. When this individual cannot understand the customer service representative they are speaking with, it just causes more frustration and does little to solve the problem.
