IBIS MRI machine
In the month of April, USA Today published a series of articles on autism. The Center for Autism Research and the May family, who is participating in the Infant Brain Imaging Study (IBIS) and the
Early Autism Risk Longitudinal Investigation (EARLI), were featured in a front page story on autism research, new brain findings, and future research directions. The online article from 4/30/2012 also includes interviews with CAR scientist Sarah Paterson, PhD and clinician Juhi Pandey, PhD

BrockAccording to new estimates released by the CDC, approximately 1 in 88 children in the United States has a diagnosis on the autism spectrum. CBS Evening News visited the Center for Autism Research to learn more about how researchers, clinicians, and families are evolving in their understanding of and response to a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. Autism is Costing Billions of Dollars Annually

David Mandell, ScD, Associate Director of the Center for Autism Research (CAR), collaborated on a study that found that autism costs the United States about $137 billion per year. Read full article>>

Social Motivation, Reward and the Roots of Autism
CAR Director, Robert Schultz, PhD and CAR researchers Gregor Kohls, PhD and Coralie Chevallier, PhD discuss social motivation and the reward system. Impaired reward circuitry in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) may help explain social deficits, increased interest in special interests, repetitive behaviors, and anxiety symptoms. Additionally, understanding the reward system may lead to a better understanding of the benefit of reinforcement-based interventions, such as applied behavioral analysis (ABA), and why these treatments are successful for only about half of individuals with ASD. Center for Autism Research (CAR) researcher,  Dr. Timothy Roberts, and his team are #18 on the list for their groundbreaking research in measuring the timing of events in the brains of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), Dr. Roberts has found that children with ASD process sounds 10 to 20 milliseconds slower than typical children.

Determining the Genetics of ASD (click to view study flyer): currently recruiting children ages 6-13 with ASD diagnosis; study can be completed in your home or local community

Study of Social Functioning and Genetics (click to view study flyer): currently recruiting children ages 6-13 with ASD diagnosis; study takes place in Philadelphia; brain imaging (MRI) is NOT required for this age group

If your family is interested in participating, please call the recruitment team at 267-425-3135 or email [email protected].
