Computer Applications Photo Enhancement Project | | The Upper School Computer Applications class recently completed a unit on photo enhancement in Photoshop. They learned about smoothing skin tone, whitening teeth, brightening eyes, enhancing color, converting to black and white, reintroducing color to black and white, and much more. The students enjoyed the unit, learned a great deal, and put their learning into action by taking an existing photo, enhancing it, and converting it into a Christmas card. Pictured below are a few before (left) and after (right) shots of their work. Happy holidays!

"Bigs and Littles" Collaboration
The Computer Applications class also collaborated with the third graders last month to produce a video of the younger students' skit of The Spider and The Fly, a poem by Mary Howitt. The Computer Applications students filmed the third graders reading their lines in front of a plain, green wall. They then eliminated the color green from the film and replaced it with context-appropriate still photos. This is the same technology used by news channels to produce the weather report. The third graders joined the Upper School students in class yesterday to view the final product. They were thrilled with the results and are excited for their parents to see their performance on the screen. Enjoy the video!

Mandarin Chinese Class Field Trip
The Upper School Mandarin Chinese students recently took a field trip to have lunch and practice their language skills at Asian Chef. They spoke Mandarin Chinese to the native Chinese speaking servers to order dishes and paid bills using what they have learned in lessons on numbers, money, and ordering at a cafeteria. They did a great job. On the way back, the students sang Chinese songs of Family and Pinyin - the Chinese phonetic system. According to the teacher, Elizabeth Zhao, "I am sure they are ready for this real life task whenever they are in a Chinese restaurant or cafeteria, whether it is in the US or China! I am so proud of them!"

Someone took the Heritage Hawk from the fourth graders' Christmas tree! However, the thief left behind some tell-tale evidence...a footprint, some M&M's, and a note with a fingerprint on it. The fourth grade students called on resident expert, faculty member, Gina Watkiss, to help them examine the "crime scene" and figure out how they should proceed to solve this mystery. The detectives interviewed suspects, conducting lab experiments on the evidence left at the scene, and using their understanding of the properties of matter to try to determine who took their hawk. Even though false evidence was planted to confuse our fourth grade detectives, they managed to solve the mystery! The fingerprint of art teacher, Meredith Wilson, was found on the note, but was someone trying to frame her? The culprit was third grade teacher, Connie Avery, who left a shoe print and a handwriting sample at the scene of the "crime."

Gingerbread Houses for the EC Students
Every year, the Early Childhood class does a unit on The Gingerbread Man in December. To complement the unit, Emeline (Heritage class of '78) and Edward Loughlin donated gingerbread house kits for a special activity this year. The children had a wonderful time constructing their houses and were able to do it independently, which was a boost to their self-confidence. The children took their gingerbread houses home to share with their family. Crafts are good for small children because they help them learn to listen first, follow directions, and stay on task. This project helped the teachers with one of their overarching goals - lengthening attention spans so students are better prepared for Pre-Kindergarten. Many thanks to the Loughlins for this wonderful activity! |
