Heritage Fund 100% Participation Party
Ms. Connie Avery's 2010-2011 third grade class was the first class to achieve an impressive 100% parent participation rate in the Heritage Fund drive. That group of students, now fourth graders, were treated to a pizza party last Friday. Karen Mansour decorated a special table for them during their lunch period. They were served pizza and drinks. The children were given an array of candy and other treats to take home. Thank you parents and students of Ms. Avery's class for your hard work and dedication to the 2010-2011 Heritage Fund drive. Good job!

Tremendous Reponse to SSO Plea
A great big Thank You to all who responded to our plea on Wednesday regarding the Georgia Goal Scholarship Program. An additional $15,000 was collected, with more promised for the next few days. We were able to fax the paperwork to Atlanta, and we have high hopes that the donations will be included in the 2011 tax year. If the Department of Revenue rejects any paperwork due to the $50 million cap being reached, the donations will be returned.
Situations like this remind us that it is our families, and the generosity of our donors, that have made Heritage the truly exceptional school that it is today. |
Grandparents' Day November 11
Grandparents' Day is Friday, November 11. We hope all of our grandparents will join us for a look into the day of a Heritage student. ELC festivities will begin at 8:30 am in the Kindergym, followed by visits to the classrooms and the Library for the Book Fair.
8:30 am begins visits for the grandparents of Upper School students. Those grandparents are invited to tour our Upper School and see their grandchildren at work.
At 9:00 am, grandparents of children in grades 1 - 6 are invited to the SLC for a program of patriotic music, followed by scheduled classrooms visits.
Students in grades 5 - 8 are asked to meet their grandparents in the SLC at 10 am and take them to their classrooms.
Coffee will be served in all three venues.
Parents: Please note that this is a regular half day of school. Please do send your children to school even if their grandparents are unable to attend. They have all worked hard on the music part of the program and activities are planned for them, as a class, throughout the morning.
We look forward to welcoming our grandparents to campus!

Heritage Participates in Greener Greater Newnan |
The Greener Greater Newnan Festival was held on October 22 at Ashley Park. The annual event is a student-led public awareness campaign designed to educate the community on reducing our carbon footprint.
Upper School science students, K. Martin, E. Martin, and J. Prock, manned a booth for Heritage, appealing to a young audience with an ocean display including examples of seashells, coral, and horseshoe crabs. Visitors also experimented with a unique sand used in cleaning up major oil spills at beaches and a "magical" fish that moved.
J. Wienand, G. NeSmith, and T. Stoffle, members of the Heritage instrumental band, The Talons, also performed at the Festival.
According to Upper School science teacher, Gina Watkiss, "our participation in the festival was a success and definitely something we want to do again next year." |
Heritage Students Write Letters to Soldiers

Heritage students added their letters to the troops as part of a project sponsored by The Bert Show on radio station Q100 in Atlanta. The expressed purpose of the program was "to collect 400,000 thank you letters so that every single troop overseas can receive a letter on Thanksgiving day thanking them for their service." The Show announced that they met and exceeded the goal by collecting 405,925 letters. It was a good opportunity for our students in grades 1 - 12 to take the time to reflect on the service of the women and men of the military as well as practice letter writing skills. |

Second Grade Wampum Belts
The white, purple, and black shells used by the Iroquois were called "wampum." The shells were woven into belts and clothing to show wealth and power. Dark beads were the most valuable. Wampum belts were exchanged during a treaty to show good faith.
The second grade students have been studying the Iroquois. The students had the exciting opportunity to graph their own original patterns and then string the wampum beads into a belt. This project included the integration of math and social studies within the second grade curriculum.
The students are now planning a peace ceremony for the class. At the ceremony, they will sit in a circle, hold hands, and say a chant to chase away all sorrow and bring joy and peace to their hearts. The students will then hang their wampum belts on the peace stand in the classroom and give their pledge of friendship to each other. |
