Sixth Grade Campout

ODE CampoutThe sixth graders have just completed their first Outdoor Education campout.  The students, Frank Marchman, and Gail Jones had an incredible time last Thursday and Friday at the Marchman's farm.

Thursday was spent setting up the campsite, swimming, canoeing and fishing at the lake.  Evening activities included watching the middle school football team win against Trinity Christian in a great game. They headed back to the farm that night for a special treat - swimming in Mr. and Mrs. Sam Candler's pool!  The Candlers were very gracious to have 25 excited sixth graders swimming while they tried to sleep!

ODE campoutFriday, after a quick breakfast, they headed out on a long, three-mile hike led by Mr. Marchman. They learned some interesting facts about the flora and fauna of the area.  Halfway into the hike, they stopped off at Line Creek to explore and play in the creek where some of the students came face to face with some interesting "fauna."

Ultimate Frisbee Comes to Heritage

An Ultimate Frisbee club team is forming at The Heritage School.  The team is open to any student, male or female, who is interested in learning and playing the "ultimate" club sport.  Practices are on Fridays during XL.  There has been a good turn out so far at the practices and the students are excited.  A box of 25 regulation-weight frisbees arrived last week and they are available for purchase at a discounted price of $7 each for students who would like to practice at home.  Scrimmages will be scheduled later in the year, and we are hoping to be invited to a tournament in Atlanta in early spring.  A clinic will be led by Georgia Tech and UGA players on Sunday afternoon, September 11 at Heritage from 3:00 - 5:00 pm.  Send your interested students out to our next practice!  For more information, contact Kim Tiernan at ktiernan@heritagehawks.org.

Spend Spring Break in Costa Rica!

Zip-Line in Costa RicaStudents in grades 10-12 are invited to attend a trip to Costa Rica sponsored by Gail Jones, Lory Pendergrast, and David Boyd, Jr.  The trip will include four days in the Monteverde Cloud Forest at the UGA Ecological Reserve.  While there, we will swim under a waterfall, hike at night and during the day seeing both the flora and fauna of the cloud forest, visit a working organic coffee farm, cook with a local family, zip line across the vast forest canopy, and so much more!  We will conclude our trip in the Nicoya Peninsula and visit a rain forest reserve, meet monkeys face to face, snorkel, and sea kayak and/or fish in the Pacific.  The cost of approximately $1500 includes airfare, accommodations, food, in-country transportation, and most activities. Contact either Gail Jones or Lory Pendergrast for more information or to reserve your space. Space is limited!

Heritage Students to Visit Paris, the Alps, and the Riviera next Spring!

The French Department is excited to offer a trip to France and Switzerland next Spring.  Departing March 28 and returning on April 6, 2012, students will spend the first three days in Paris, where, in addition to visiting popular tourist sites, students will go to an "'Ecole Boulangerie," where they will learn to bake bread in the traditional French style.  They will also dine at "58 Tour Eiffel," a restaurant which is located in the Eiffel Tower.

From Paris, students will head to Geneva, Switzerland, and then back to Chamonix, France, in the Alps.  In Chamonix, they will compete in a scavenger hunt to learn more about the culture of this alpine town.

From Chamonix, the students will head to the Riviera, visiting Nice and its beaches and the beautiful town of Eze.  They will also visit the famous Fragonard perfume factory where they will be able to create a custom perfume scent.

This trip is open to all Upper School students and their parents. The cost of the trip is $3,231 for travelers who sign up  with a $195 registration deposit.  These costs include everything except lunch on each day of the trip.  Interested travelers may also elect to set up a monthly payment plan for the trip.
