Rachel's Challenge

Rachel's Challenge LogoOn Wednesday, September 7, Rachel's Challenge will be introduced to Heritage students.  This program was founded by the parents and brother of Rachel Scott, the first victim of Columbine.  They were inspired to develop this program of bullying and violence abatement based on Rachel's own acts of kindness and compassion prior to her death and on the contents of her six diaries found after her passing.  The program's intent is to challenge students and adults to change the way they treat others.

During the morning, our students in grades 1-12 and their teachers will attend age-appropriate assemblies that promote kindness and compassion, followed by an afternoon of workshops for students in grades 9-11, and classroom discussions for students in grades 1-8.

Parents and the community-at-large are invited to attend an evening program conducted by the staff of the Rachel's Challenge program from 7:00 - 8:00 pm in the Student Life Center.  Mark your calendar so that you have the opportunity to know more about this motivating program.
The Heritage Community Discount Card

Heritage Community Discount Card

The Parents' Club is excited to announce The 2011-2012 Heritage Community Discount Card fundraiser.

Instead of conducting multiple fundraisers throughout the year, The Parents' Club has chosen two fundraising efforts: The Heritage Community Discount Card fundraiser and the Heritage Fun Run for grades EC-4, which will be held in the spring. Both efforts are Parents' Club-sponsored fundraisers, and 100% of the money raised directly benefits The Heritage School. Last year's Community Discount Card program raised over $6000 profit and helped to fund technology-related purchases for the School.

The Heritage Community Discount Card features local business discounts that can be used continuously at each business for one full year. The card also features a one-time use coupon purchase at Jump 2 It or Urban Jungle Laser Tag. Each Discount Card sells for $5 and offers savings each time you shop!

Participating businesses
Cookie Express, Espresso Lane, Good Sports, Hospital Discount Pharmacy, Jump 2 It, Urban Jungle, Lakeside Cleaners, Mama Lucia's, Me and Ed's Pizzeria, Partners II Pizza @ Summer Grove, Zany Cuts for Kids, Scott's Bookstore, Sprayberry's Barbeque, The Skin Spa at Newnan Dermatology, Newnan Station Tire and Service.

How the program works

Each student is challenged to sell ten Discount Cards, or fifteen if selling as a family with multiple children.  Envelopes containing the Discount Cards will be distributed to students in grades EC-7. The Discount Cards will be mailed to students in grades 8-12.

Important dates

The fundraiser will begin on September 7 and continue for three weeks, ending on September 28. Envelopes will be returned on September 29. All collected money and unsold cards should be returned in the supplied envelope to the student's homeroom on the deadline.

How to receive extra cards

Additional cards are available in the front office, or contact Beverly Minor royalminor@numail.org.

Pirate Day in the Early Learning Center

Big Pirate and Little PirateThe Early Learning Center celebrated Pirate Day today. The students and faculty dressed in pirate garb and enjoyed buccaneer snacks.  Several pirate guests joined the fun to read a favorite swashbuckling story and pose for pictures. The students got to ride around campus in a pirate "ship."  What a fun day!

Second Grade Fossil Dig

Fossil DigSecond grade paleontologists are studying fossils and dug for fossils at the Heritage dig site this week. It was a rather tedious, messy job, but the second graders handled it like pros! Using hammers, chisels, screwdrivers, brushes, and magnifying glasses, the paleontologists did not find any fossils, but they uncovered 25 crystals! Fossil Dig

Like good scientists, they worked together to clean up the dig site at the end of their search. Each student got to take home two stones, and they are continuing to search for fossils around campus.

Everyday Creation

Painting by David Boyd, Jr.Art teacher, David Boyd, Jr., was recently juried onto dailypainteroriginals.com, an exclusive online group of 26 painters from around the country that practice the discipline of creating a painting everyday.  Mr. Boyd is such a believer in the act of creation everyday that all 20 of his AP Photography students are maintaining a 365 day photoblog where students are asked to post an unassigned photo everyday.

Mr. Boyd was juried onto the international site dailypainters.com, which has over 150 painters, in 2007 when he first began painting daily. In addition, Boyd is also a member of dailypaintworks.com.

You can follow Mr. Boyd's daily painting exploits on his blog at compelledtopaint.blogspot.com. Enter your email to get his paintings in your inbox. You can also see his larger works on his website at www.davidboydjr.com. See them in person at his first one-man show in over four years, Progression, at the Dogwood Gallery in Tyrone on November 12.

Heritage Students to Visit Paris, the Alps, and the Riviera next Spring!

The French Department is excited to offer a trip to France and Switzerland next Spring.  Departing March 28 and returning on April 6, 2012, students will spend the first three days in Paris, where, in addition to visiting popular tourist sites, students will go to an "'Ecole Boulangerie," where they will learn to bake bread in the traditional French style.  They will also dine at "58 Tour Eiffel," a restaurant which is located in the Eiffel Tower.

From Paris, students will head to Geneva, Switzerland, and then back to Chamonix, France, in the Alps.  In Chamonix, they will compete in a scavenger hunt to learn more about the culture of this alpine town.

From Chamonix, the students will head to the Riviera, visiting Nice and its beaches and the beautiful town of Eze.  They will also visit the famous Fragonard perfume factory where they will be able to create a custom perfume scent.

This trip is open to all Upper School students and their parents. The cost of the trip is $3,231 for travelers who sign up  with a $195 registration deposit.  These costs include everything except lunch on each day of the trip.  Interested travelers may also elect to set up a monthly payment plan for the trip.

Please contact Alice Browning (abrowning@heritagehawks.org) with questions.
