Our Heritage Fund participation among current families has grown to 47%. We only need 10 more gifts to reach 50%! Compared to last year's numbers, we are doing incredibly well. However, the foundations that might consider awarding grant money to the School want to see our parent participation at 80% or better. Our goal remains at 100% parent participation.
In our Participation by Grade race, the fifth grade is still in the lead and is close to topping 80%. Ten classes have now exceeded 50%. Way to go, everyone!
Remember, all gifts make a difference; no gift is too small; and if you have more than one child, your participation counts in each child's grade.
If you have not yet contributed to the Heritage Fund, please make your gift online today, or contact the front office at 770-253-9898 for a Heritage Fund gift form.

If you have already contributed to the Heritage Fund, on behalf of the students who benefit from your generosity, thank you for your support. |
Lady Hawks Soccer Team Headed to State Finals!

The Lady Hawks will play in the GISA Class AA State Soccer Championship for the second time in three seasons after defeating Piedmont Academy 5-1 in the semi-finals.
Victory was less than certain at the half, when the score was 1-1. However, after a half-time speech and readjustment, Heritage came back with a concerted effort and played extremely well.
Senior, Emily Gray Powell, scored three of the Lady Hawks' five goals against Piedmont, while junior, Megan Gruber, scored the other two. Powell scored her 191st career goal during the game.

Heritage Student Wins New Car for Perfect Attendance!

Heritage senior, Kegan Isaack, won a brand new 2011 Chevrolet Cruze at a drawing on May 7 as part of Chevy's Drive for Perfection program.
He was one of 3,700 eligible metro-Atlanta high school students with a 98% or better attendance record for their senior year. Kegan, who plans to attend Georgia State University next fall, will graduate from Heritage with a 4.0 grade point average.
The Drive for Perfection campaign included 34 Georgia Best Chevy dealers, among them, Southtowne Motors of Newnan, where Kegan picked up his car on Monday. In addition to Kegan's car, Southtowne Motors contributed $50 to Heritage for every test drive by students and parents mentioning The Heritage School. In all, the test drive contributions amounted to over $2,200!
Many thanks to Steve Mader, owner of Southtowne Motors, and the Chevy Drive for Perfection campaign!

Doug Kees Performs on Top-Ranked Album
Heritage instrumental music teacher, Doug Kees, plays guitar on two songs on Colt Ford's latest album, Every Chance I Get, which debuted at number three last week on the Billboard country chart! The songs are "This is Our Song" and "What I Call Home."
Doug got involved with the album because of his association with the owner of Phivestarr Productions, Jared Sciullo, who produced the album. Jared is married to Heritage alumna, Jenny Thompson, class of 2001. When Jared wanted to take guitar lessons a few years ago, Jenny knew just who to recommend! Since then, Doug and Jared have collaborated on several productions.
If you pick up a copy of Every Chance I Get, you will see Doug Kees' name in the credits. Congratulations, Doug!

Heritage Science Teacher to Participate in Curriculum Project at Berkeley
Lory Pendergrast was chosen to participate in a curriculum development project being developed by Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California at Berkeley. "We are developing Earth Science curriculum units that incorporate a focus on 'disciplinary literacy' that integrates hands-on investigations with reading, writing, and talking science," states the letter from Jacqueline Barber of LHS at UC Berkeley. The curriculum project is entitled Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading. Ms. Pendergrast is thrilled that the project speaks to The Heritage School's SACS initiatives on critical thinking as well as reading and writing across the curriculum.
This program is part of the GEMS (Great Explorations in Math and Science) and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Ms. Pendergrast has used several of these programs over the course of the years: Rivercutters, Plate Tectonics and Stories in Stone, and has found them to be incredible tools for middle school science students. Consequently, she was 1 of 19 teachers across the nation chosen to participate. |

The Adopt-a-Physicist Program continues to be a success with our physics students. Dr. Joel Fajans from Berkeley, California, was the class favorite this month. His research is on trying to trap antihydrogen from antiprotons and positrons. His research at Cal Berkely was deemed a major breakthrough in physics for 2010. Dr. Fajans is the physicist who did the "antimatter" research background for the Dan Brown's best-selling Angels and Demons book and movie (starring Tom Hanks).
From black holes to comets and to NASA rockets, the physics class had another great experience chatting on line with physicists at leading institutions across the nation. |
