The Class of 2011 received some exciting college acceptances and scholarships this week. Every student in the Class of 2011 has been accepted to a college or university, with more decisions coming every day. All together, the 20 seniors have received 48 acceptances from 30 different schools as close as LaGrange College and as far away as Pace University in Manhattan & Metro State College in Denver. 70% of our seniors have already been accepted to their "first choice" college. These students have also accumulated almost $600,000 worth of scholarship dollars...almost all academic! Three of our 20 seniors have signed to play a varsity sport at their college, Evan Graybill (baseball at Atlanta Christian College), Emily Gray Powell (soccer at Valdosta State), and John Veal (football at LaGrange College).
We continue to be impressed by this fantastic group of students! See the entire list of college acceptances for the Heritage class of 2011.

Senior Aleisha Khan and teacher Gina Watkiss were recognized recently as the Heritage STAR student and teacher at a luncheon hosted by the Newnan Rotary Club.
The STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) Program is held each year to recognize top academic seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development. To be named a STAR, students must have the highest SAT score in their school and must be in the top 10 percent of their class based on grade point average. STAR students name their own STAR Teacher, who most influenced their academic achievement.
"When she was only in fourth grade, I saw a future AP Chem student," said Ms. Watkiss, who has always supported and "cheered for" Aleisha. "Heritage is a tight-knit community, like a family," according to Aleisha.
Congratulations to both Heritage STARs! |
Former Faculty Member Dances to Benefit Community Welcome House

Rosalyn Boyd will be competing in the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce's Coweta's Dancing Stars competition on Tuesday, April 19, at 7:00 pm, at the Centre for the Performing and Visual Arts. The event is to benefit the Community Welcome House, a local safe haven for women and children. The Community Welcome House is a transitional facility that provides room and board, food, medical care, child care, and counseling for local women and children fleeing unsafe households.
Rosalyn is a former longtime faculty member of the Heritage School, and parent of three Heritage graduates, including current art teacher, David Boyd, Jr.
The dance competition raises funds for the Welcome House by allowing the public to vote online for their favorite dancer. Each $1 donation constitutes one vote in the competition. Every dollar vote for Rosalyn Boyd produces a $1 donation directly to Community Welcome House. You can purchase as many $1 votes as you wish. All donations are tax deductible.
Please join us in supporting Rosalyn's spirited performance by voting for her, as she competes for both the People's Choice and Best Dancer titles to support the Community Welcome House. To vote for Rosalyn Boyd, and to learn more about the Coweta's Dancing Stars competition/benefit, visit the Dancing Stars website. Please help us spread the word by forwarding this information to your email contacts and posting it on your Facebook page!

Earth Sciences Students Get Hands On Learning
Lory Pendergrast's 7th Grade Earth Science students recently studied weather phenomena/disasters. Here you see one group's culminating project, which illustrates the mechanics and excitement of a tornado. Students created both a wind tunnel and a smoke effect which demonstrated how debris gets "stuck" inside the wind tunnel of a tornado. Other projects included weathercasts, tsunami demonstrations, and simulated hurricanes.

All month, the Heritage Student Government Association has been putting on a March Madness Small Goals Basketball Tournament on the outside basketball court every Thursday and Friday during XL to raise money for the Coweta Samaritan Clinic.
Twelve teams of four upper school students are taking part in the tournament. Each participant paid an entry fee of $5, raising a total of $240. Half of that money will help fund SGA projects, and the other half will be donated directly to the Coweta Samaritan Clinic.
The students have had a lot of fun with the tournament. "It's great because you get to play co-ed, you don't have to be really good at basketball to participate, you get to dunk in the smaller goals, and the teams have fun names," says Lydia Powell, SGA President. The championship game will take place next Friday during XL.
The Coweta Samaritan Clinic is scheduled to open this summer, and will offer free medical care to Cowetans who qualify. Several Heritage parents are involved with the clinic - including Dr. Kay Crosby, Laura Thomas, Sharon Gruber, and Val Cranford - making the clinic a natural choice for the SGA to choose as a charity.
