Heritage Singers Perform at Disney World

The Heritage Singers just returned from their third consecutive Magic Music Days performance at Disney World!  The trip took place February 11-14, and the ensemble performed on the Waterside Stage in Downtown Disney for a standing-room-only crowd.  Song selections performed were from the popular television series Glee and our singers wowed the audience with high-energy performances of Jump, Sweet Caroline, Somebody to Love, and Don't Stop Believing.  Soloists were Kegan Isaack, Isa Gutierrez, Alex Newman, Allison Sullivan, and Ben Dudley.

During their stay, students enjoyed a complimentary dinner at Planet Hollywood, three days in the Disney parks, as well as being named "Honorary Cast Members" on the day of their performance.  Each singer received a commemorative pin and tote bag for being part of the Ears for the Arts program and Heritage received their third Mousecar - a Mickey Mouse trophy for the music room.

Director Karen Hurd was pleasantly surprised when several audience members approached her after the students' performance to ask if Heritage was a performing arts school.  What a compliment for our talented young musicians!  We hope you will join us at our Spring Concert in May for a repeat performance!

Quebec Trip
During Winter Break, a group of 10 students spent 4 days visiting Quebec and participating in Carnaval, which is the Canadian Mardi Gras.   In addition to practicing their French, the students learned about Quebec and the culture of French-speaking Canada.  Students toured historic sites, went dog sledding, snow shoeing, ice skating, ice tubing, and visited a traditional cabane à sucre.  At the cabane à sucre, the students learned about the process of harvesting maple sap and converting it to syrup.  They then ate a traditional cabane à sucre meal and learned traditional Acadian dances.

Key Club Helps Run for the Angels

Key Club Volunteers for Angel's House RunThirty-two Heritage Key Club members volunteered to help with The Angel's House Run for the Angels earlier this month.  The Heritage Key Club has worked with The Angel's House since it's inaugural run about a decade ago, and they feel helping to keep The Angel's House open is one of their most important Key Club activities.  Pictured here are Ellie Crosby, president and Kat Wendt, secretary.

Third Grade Studies Native Americans

Navaho Jewelry

The third graders recently completed an extensive study of Native Americans. They began the study with the Native Americans of the Plains, with an emphasis on the Sioux. The students then studied those Native Americans of the Southwest, with emphasis on the Hopi and Navajo. They were able to compare and contrast the lifestyles of these two with the lifestyles of the Sioux. The children learned about Kachinas and the part that these Kachinas played in the lives of the Hopi. They then designed and built their own kachinas with Ms. Meredith in art using various wooden pieces. In the spirit of the Navajo, the children designed and made lovely weavings and  turquoise jewelry. Now, it is "Wagons Ho" as the children begin the study of pioneers and the westward movement.
