The Heritage School Outing Club took a rafting trip down the Oconee River September 17-19. Fifteen ninth through twelfth graders tackled the same stretch of river that the 1996 Olympics teams used for their white water events. Take a look at their fantastic photos!

Heritage was happy to welcome alumnus Johann Hassanally (Class of 2009) back to campus this week. Johann is a freshman at Oglethorpe University, and has recently been named Assistant Programming Manager for the Georgia Shakespeare Theater Company and Oglethorpe University. He will work with the theater cast, raise and tear down stages, run lights and sound, and will be in charge of updating the theater company's website. Johann and two other students were chosen out of 20 interviewees. He said that his education at Heritage helped him get this job. "Ms. Karrie [Jones] was a role model for me. Everything I learned from Ms. Karrie and Mr. Jeff [her husband] about staging, lighting, and technical work prepared me for this job." He added that being a part of the Heritage drama department for three years made him realize he would enjoy working with the theater company, and his new employer called his Heritage experience a "deciding factor" in offering him the job. Way to go, Johann, and thanks for coming back and sharing your day with us! |

Students of Gina Watkiss welcomed two visitors to campus this week. The Physics class was visited by John Blankenship, retired DeVry University robotics professor. Mr. Blankenship took the students to the computer lab and had them write their own computer program to simulate Newton's laws of motion - freefall and gravity.
The AP Environmental Science class is currently studying hurricanes. Lara Richardson, daughter of Lower School Head, Marianne Richardson, spoke to the class about Hurricane Katrina. Lara is the VP for Creative at TLC in Washington, D.C. She produced her own Katrina documentary for TLC based on her work as a Red Cross volunteer after Katrina.
Lara was the second visitor to AP Environmental this year. Kate Parker, aunt of Heritage student Matthew Davenport, recently returned from Jordan and spoke to the class about women's rights and political issues in the Middle East. She came dressed as she would be if she lived in Jordan. |

Collect pledges now - October 6
Collections October 7 - 14
The Heritage Fun Run is the major fundraiser for the year for the Parents' Club. Students are encouraged to ask their extended family, neighbors, and friends to sponsor them in the run. Students will receive a pledge form with sample wording to help each student explain our school goal and collect pledges per lap run. Students will be eligible for prizes, depending of the level of donations they collect.
For the first time this year, the Parents' Club is putting on this event without any outside help, so 100% of the donations raised will directly benefit the school. Funds collected will purchase and maintain state of the art technology equipment.
All EC-6th grade students get to participate in the outdoor Fun Run. This is an active event with music, warm ups, and students running or walking around a marked 1/16 mile track while volunteers count their laps.
The Fun Run committee is made up entirely of volunteer parents. Please consider volunteering! Contact Loretta Johnson with questions .
Box Tops First collection deadline October 22Box Tops provide an excellent means of raising money for our school without parents having to spend any more than they normally would. Many grocery store items, such as Cheerios and Kleenex, feature the Box Tops logo (seen at right). Please look for this logo on boxes in your pantry. Clip the box tops and submit them to the school before October 22. Each one is worth 10 cents for our school! Our goal is to raise $650 this year. We will collect Box Tops again later in the school year, so keep clipping the Box Tops even after the October deadline. You may drop them at any time in the collection bin in the Library. |
