The summer brought several noteworthy news items concerning the Heritage family that we would like to pass along.
The Detroit Tigers drafted Jack Duffey, class of 2010, from The Heritage School in the 28th round of this year's draft. Jack was 27-2 his last two years at Heritage and was very instrumental in our quest for a state championship. He was named GISA AA Player of the Year for the second straight year. Jack represented our school as the starting pitcher for Team Georgia in the Georgia/Alabama All Star Game at Troy University. We are very proud of Jack and his recent accolades.
Heritage baseball coach Lynn Huffstickler was named GISA AA Baseball Coach of the Year, after leading our team to the state title. He is also the Coweta County Coach of the Year for second time in three seasons.
Mills Adams, Class of 2010, won the Coweta Samaritan Clinic's logo contest. His design was selected from a pool of 70 entries by local high school students from the CEC, East Coweta, Newnan High, and Heritage. The Samaritan Clinic hopes to open in January 2011 under the direction of Heritage parent Dr. Kay Crosby. |
Music Teacher Attends Workshop |
Karen Hurd attended the "Joy of Singing" workshop this summer. Music teachers at the conference previewed new music and were introduced to new ideas for use in both the music classroom as well as performances. She is pictured here with John Jacobson and Cristi Cary Miller, prominent leaders in Music Education, and composers/arrangers of much of the music Mrs. Hurd uses in the Heritage Music Program.

The Heritage School Dear Heritage Family,
What a wonderfully smooth beginning to the year! On the first day of school, Mrs. Garth's fourth graders wrote inspirational messages on the sidewalks to welcome their friends back to Heritage. Some of those messages were "Welcome back to Heritage, friends!" "We love school!" "Let's make this a great day!" Indeed, we are off to a great start. As I walk around campus, I am pleased to see so many new faces along with the familiar. We opened the year with a record high of 425 students, including 100 new students! Our teachers and students are working hard to integrate our new students into the family. We are thrilled to have Rusty Evans as our new Middle School Director. His presence in the Middle School allows me to spend more energy in the Upper School, to the great benefit of both divisions. We are happy to have started practice for our new volleyball program under the leadership of coach Mary Louise Hunt, and are excited to let you know that we are participating in GISA debate for the first time this year. Karrie Jones will do a wonderful job as their sponsor. Our football scrimmage was unfortunately rained out last week, but we are enthusiastic about our first game tonight against Dawson Creek. I hope to see you all out there at 7:30!
Thank you for attending Orientation and Open House. We had a record turnout for the 7th through 12th grade Open House, with 79% of seventh grade students represented by a parent, 67% of eighth graders, 69% of ninth graders, 63% of tenth graders, 69% of eleventh graders, and 55% of seniors represented. Wow! Thank you for making it a great night.
I know it will be another fantastic year, and I am thrilled that you have chosen Heritage as the school "home" for your children.
Sincerely,
Judith Griffith Head of School |

The Heritage Cross Country team will run in the Tatnall Invitational tomorrow, August 28, at 10:00 am at Wesleyan College in Macon. Directions to the meet can be found on the Heritage website.

We are excited to announce that The Heritage School Parents' Club will be conducting our first annual Heritage Community Discount Card fundraiser. Rather than conducting multiple fundraisers throughout the year, The Parents' Club has chosen two fundraising efforts: The Heritage Community Discount Card fundraiser for grades EC- 8, and Heritage Fun Run for grades EC- 6. Both efforts are Parents' Club-sponsored fundraisers -100% of the money raised directly benefits The Heritage School.
The Heritage Community Discount Card is a card featuring local business discounts that can be used continuously at each business for one full year. The card also features a one time use coupon for $10 off a purchase at any Pike Nursery. Each Discount Card sells for $5 and offers savings each time you shop!
Each student is challenged to sell ten Discount Cards; families with multiple children at Heritage are challenged to sell twelve. The fundraiser will begin on August 31 and continue for two weeks, ending on September 14.
Participating businesses: Coldstone Creamery, Espresso Lane, Golden's on the Square, Hospital Discount Pharmacy, Lakeside Cleaners, Mama Lucia's, Moe's Southwest Grill, Moji's Muffin & Whatnots, Partners II Pizza at Summergrove, Pike Nurseries, Planet Smoothie, Scott's Bookstore, Sprayberry's Barbeque.
Please support this worthy cause and buy a discount card from a student! |
Heritage Artists Featured in Southern Living Idea House |
Heritage alumnus and art teacher, David Boyd, Jr., and Heritage alumna Millie Gosch, have paintings hanging in the Southern Living Idea House in Senoia. Both were mentioned by name in the August issue of Southern Living magazine. The Idea House is open for tours Wednesday through Sunday through December 12. Be sure to stop by and admire their work! David will also be the featured artist at Panoply/Flint Gallery for Artwalk in October. |

We have completed the final step required for certification for Project S.A.V.E., a comprehensive school program for the prevention of sudden cardiac arrest. Renae Smith, our school nurse, is the coordinator for our program, and she has been working toward this goal for three years. This is a huge accomplishment! An important requirement for Project S.A.V.E. certification is to have AEDs (automated external defibrillators) on campus and people qualified to use them. We have placed four AEDs around campus, and have led CPR/AED training for our faculty and staff. Project S.A.V.E. is one of many things we do to keep our students healthy and safe. |
