"Bigs" Help "Littles" in the Chemistry Lab |
Once a month throughout the school year, the PK3, PK4, and Kindergarten students have had the opportunity to join Ms. Gina in the chemistry lab to learn about scientific facts that tie in with their current studies. This year, because of our school-wide Year of the Ocean theme, there was a heavy emphasis on ocean-related facts. Some of the impressive things our young students learned about include the salinity of the ocean and bio-luminescence. They got to paint with real sponges gathered from Apalachicola, and for dental month, they made a giant tube of sharks' toothpaste, which involved an exploding enzymatic reaction using hydrogen peroxide! This week, as a special treat, the Kindergarteners got to join the upper school chemistry students, who helped them learn about acids and bases and how vegetables can change color with baking soda and vinegar. Chemistry lab for the ELC is just one more benefit of a Heritage education, and it has provided a valuable learning experience for our young scholars. |
