Dive Into Reading

Dive into Reading

On Friday, April 2, Lower School students celebrated good books and reading at this year's Spring Reading Event. This year the theme was Dive into Reading.  Students were surprised when they walked into the media center to find that it had been transformed into an ocean!  Everyone brought along great books, participated in the Reading Cheer, listened to teachers and parents reading, and enjoyed a snack.  Several students won books by answering Ms. Jo's trivia questions about books they have read.  Mr. Curtis Richardson, from The Wren House, thrilled everyone with his wonderful storytelling.  What a great way to spend the morning!
Sophomore Julie Thames to Release First CD

Say Yes CD artwork

Heritage sophomore Julie Thames has been working with singer/songwriter/ producer Diane Durrett for the past year on her first CD. "Say Yes," is set to be released Friday, April 23 at the Alamo in downtown Newnan at 8 p.m. The event is open to the public.

"Say Yes," is a country-pop album sung and co-written by Julie. "It's sort of a Taylor Swift (production) with an edge," described Ms. Durrett, Julie's vocal instructor and producer. Doug Kees, Heritage Band Director and owner of Musicology, introduced the two.

According to Ms. Durrett. "Julie really drove the project. She's a natural writer. She has fresh ideas and something to say."

"I've always liked English and had been writing poetry before I met Diane," said Julie, who also plays the keyboard and the guitar. "I put the poems to music, and it kind of kept building."

Julie balances both sides of her personality in "Say Yes," including the optimistic "Crazy rhythm," and the feisty tune, "Push comes to shove." The combination leaves listeners yearning for more.

Please join Julie at her release party at the Alamo on April 23 at 8 p.m.  There is a $5 cover charge.  All ages are welcome.

Nominate a Candidate for the Ken Fetter Memorial Contribution Award
Heritage logoKen Fetter was a valued employee of the Heritage School who was tragically killed in a car accident after working at Heritage for many years. He was the type of employee who went above and beyond his job description. He truly cared for the students and the school, and put in hours working towards its improvement.

In 2000 the Upper School Student Government instituted an award in his memory to be given each year at Honors Day.  The award is to recognize a Heritage family member who has dedicated time and contributed to the school above and beyond what is required of them.  This award can go to a faculty member, staff member, board member, parent, etc.

We need your help in nominating candidates for the Ken Fetter Award.  The nominees will be voted on by the Upper School student body.  If you know of someone in the Heritage community who has the qualities that were exemplified in Mr. Fetter, please send this form with a brief description of why you think your candidate is deserving of the award.  All nominations must be turned in to the office or to Maggie Ginn by Wedneday, April 28 in order to be considered.  Thank you for your help.

Past Winners: Kathy Murphy, Rosalyn Boyd, Chuck Brown, Steve Campbell, Judith Griffith, Jeff Stuart, Glenda Davis, Marianne Richardson, Gail Jones, Otis Jones III

SalutatorianIn last week's news, we posted that Salutatorian Drew Murray recently won second place for Boy's Solo in the State Literary competition. Drew actually won first place, while the Heritage Quartet, of which Drew is a member, won second place. We regret the error, and are proud of Drew's many accomplishments.
