MASK FOCUSES ON THE FAMILY BALANCING ACT IN ITS NEWEST ISSUE OF MASK THE MAGAZINE
SCOTTSDALE, AZWe all know that to uncover our children's passions, it's necessary to expose them
to many different activities until we find the one (or two) that sticks. But how much is too much? It's not uncommon for many families to juggle multiple kids' activities, while still trying to ensure that they study and complete homework assignments. The latest issue of MASK The Magazine: Right on Track: Finding the Right Balance When Fueling Your Children's Passions, focuses on how to maintain family balance while allowing your children's passions to flourish.
The feature story illustrates ways to avoid the over-scheduling trap. According to child psychiatrist and author Dr. Alvin Rosenfeld, "In just the past 20 years, structured sports time has doubled and unstructured children's activities have declined 50 percent." Readers will learn the pros and cons to training like the pros, the often dangerous ways children attempt to gain a competitive edge, and how parents can help their children with "positive pushing." Arizona Diamondbacks coach and former third baseman Matt Williams is the contributing writer for
the "Dad Dialed In" section. He recounts how he learned to know himself and his strengths while
pursuing his dream of professional baseball, and how he supports his own children in their pursuit of
their true passions. Four-time Olympic swimming medalist Summer Sanders, contributing writer for
the "Minute with Mom" section, writes of how she found, and briefly lost, her love of swimming and
how it has shaped her as a mother.
The Fall "SAT Section" (Student Awareness Tools) was written by MASK 2012 summer interns, and
highlights competition and their own personal experiences with how they coped with the stresses of maintaining balance. The SAT's are written solely by students and are designed to give students a voice and an opportunity to describe how they view the value of the maintaining healthy balance in their lives. The "Mom's Agenda" will remind women to put themselves back on their "to do" lists in the midst of all the kids' activities, and Food Network chef and mom of four Ree Drummond offers recipes from her family's Oklahoma cattle ranch. In the "Final Exam" section, an aspiring young dancer shares her story of
the pressures of competition and her journey of self-discovery.
From examining five signs your child may have a learning disorder, to MASK's quarterly need-to-know
tips on safety, drugs, technology, and bullying, MASK The Magazine helps you encourage your children's passions while maintaining balance and keeping the focus on family time. The fall issue is currently available at maskmatters.org and at Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe, Arizona.
