DRUG TIP
Don't mistake marijuana use by teens as less than very serious. Sixty percent of kids who smoke marijuana by age 15 go on to use Cocaine and more dangerous drugs. Today, it's important to start talking to children about the dangers of drugs as young as elementary school.

Click here for information on how to age-appropriately talk to your kids about drugs in elementary school, middle school, and high school.

TECH TIP

Remind your kids that anything sent in a text message or posted on the internet will be around forever. Tell them how picture messages, "sexting,"and posts to youtube or Facebook can affect their lives in negative ways.

Watch our CBS 5 News video about the potential effects of a poor decision to post on the internet by CLICKING HERE.

BULLYING TIP

Praise goes a long way. Reinforcing the good decisions your kids make can help them to resist peer pressure to do things that are dangerous. Remind them how proud you are of them and encourage them to share with you if they feel they are being bullied into unsafe situations.

SAFETY TIP

Watch out for boredom. Young people ages 12-17 who are frequently bored are 50% more likely to smoke, drink, and/or use illegal drugs. Additionally, there is a 40% increase in first time marijuana use in June and July compared to the rest of the year. Make extracurricular activities for your child a priority, and encourage them to find one that truly engages them. Be aware of the amount of "free time" your children have.
