Community ENGAGEment
 Unity Award Luncheon

There are many moms in the community who are making a difference in the lives of children and families every day. It is in that spirit that MASK has created the "Moms Making a Difference" Unity Award, which is designed to acknowledge women and their passion for helping families. MASK has reached out to the community to acknowledge women who are not only engaging and empowering their own families, but who go above and beyond to empower others as well, and will celebrate these change-makers and recognize their efforts.

All 28 of these inspiring women will be recognized at MASK's 2012 Unity Award Luncheon on March 28, 2012 at the Ritz-Carlton, Phoenix, as well as in the Spring issue of MASK The Magazine.

DRUG TIP: Know about this new drug: Spice, K2, and Genie are seemingly vague code words that could mean anything, but these are brands of synthetic marijuana, an herbal and chemical product that has similar effects to cannabis. The product can be smoked or made into tea, and was widely available in smoke shops the U.S. until its legal ban in March 2011. The product is still being illegally distributed.

TECH TIP: If your child is being cyberbullied on social media sites such as Facebook, encourage him or her to remove their profiles temporarily or permanently. Let your child know that by doing so they are making the choice not to participate in the situation, which can make bullying worse.

BULLYING TIP: To better prepare your child to handle a bully (and to prevent him from being one), start early. In elementary school, role-play with your child about bullies. Come up with words and actions they can use if they are ever in that situation.

SAFETY TIP: Find out your school's protocol for bullying. If it doesn't have one, encourage the administration to establish one. Bullying that occurs in 9th Grade and beyond can be emotionally devastating and can have possible effects that include substance abuse, anxiety and depression, and decreased school attendance.
