Educate by Example
| With the Holidays approaching, use this opportunity to model responsible drinking.
The holidays are rapidly approaching, and along with the decorating, wrapping, cooking and shopping, it is also a time to get together with family & friends at social events and parties, where many types of alcohol will no doubt be available in abundance. This presents us parents with a perfect opportunity to model for our children what is appropriate. It provides an opportunity to engage in conversation with our children about how we plan to model responsible drinking. Establishing healthy communication with your child, and taking advantages of situations like these, is the key to keeping our children safe and aware. Here are some ideas to help get you started: - Talk out loud with your spouse -- in front of your children -- and determine who is going to be the designated driver if you are going out for an event.
- Explain to your children your views and beliefs on alcohol.
- Remind your children that 21 is the legal drinking age, and of the consequences if they drink before then, both legally and physically. (Studies show that kids who begin drinking before age 21 are 4x more likely to become addicted to it.)
Take advantage of this opportunity. Drink responsibly, and lock up your alcohol. Set an example for your children. They learn what they see. Healthy Holidays, Kimberly Cabral |

Educate... Tech Tip
| |
So... your child is the proud owner of an iPod touch, or another device that allows kids to download "free" games. "Yes, Mom... FREE!" Really? Sounds too good to be true, right? How many kids do you know who read the fine print? Turns out, these "free" games are only really free for the first day. After that initial trial, if you have an iTunes account (with your credit card attached), and if your child has your iTunes password, you will be charged each time your child plays the game. We parents don't find out until we see our credit card bill. Sigh. Remember to keep your passwords private if you don't want to be surprised.
Download the MASK Cell Phone Contract from our website: www.maskmatters.org to help avoid some of these technology pitfalls.
