Engage...The Time is Now

Talking to your children about drugs & alcohol, eating disorders, etc., can be very uncomfortable for most parents. Uncertainty about how to bring it up, or at what age the conversation should begin might delay (or even prevent) the conversation from ever happening. It is crucial for you as a parent to establish communication with your child at an early age. You want them to learn about these dangers from you, not from the wrong people.
The best place to begin discussing these issues is in the home. We believe in early education. Your kids probably know more than you think. (That is, they think they do). Establish a clear understanding to them and try not to sugar-coat the real facts. Collect as much information as you can to prepare yourself. Knowledge is power.
· Share personal stories about someone you know (or knew) who has made unhealthy choices. Make it "REAL" to them.
· Family Structure - Establish family rules & values. Let your child know what you expect from them and how you feel about Drugs & Alcohol (or whatever the subject is).
Getting kids to talk isn't always an easy task, especially when discussing an uncomfortable topic. When kids have an active role in conversation, they feel involved and part of the discussion, rather than just being told the information by their uncool parents!
Tell your child you have something important to talk to them about. Ask them when they would like to talk with you. Give them a choice: NOW or maybe after dinner. This way, when it is time to talk, you have their full attention and they can't complain about not wanting to talk.
Here are a few ideas on how to start the conversation: Parents say: "So, have you heard about Myspace?"
"When I was your age, kids were talking about sex. Have you heard kids talking about that?" "Do you know what I learned today?" (use this after going to one of our MASK meetings, or reading an article on the computer or in print, or watching a news program or talk show about topic X).
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF DOWN TIMES We are all busy shuttling our kids to school and after-school activities. We spend countless hours in the car with our kids. Take advantage of this time! They are a captive audience. Pry them off of their handheld device and get their undivided attention. Or, talk with your kids before bed. Kids tend to talk more and with less resistance when they are tired and relaxed.
The key is to TALK...TALK...TALK. Make the time...it does make a difference.

Tech Review: Things We Love!
Sexting, cyberbullying, text-bombing. These are all extra dangers your child can face if he has a cell phone. While it can be convenient for your child to have a cell phone, there are many negatives associated with it that we parents need to be informed about. Ask yourself the following questions:
- Are your children texting when they should be in school or doing homework?
- Are they visiting parent-approved websites, or are they surfing the Internet in dangerous waters?
- Do you know where your children are? Are they being honest about where they were this evening?
- Are your children talking on the phone for hours? Who are they talking to?
Developed by our friends over at Spectorsoft, this convienent software can be downloaded to your child's smartphone and can help ease any stress that your child might experience.
Be Notified Immediately
eBlaster Mobile Instant Notification keeps parents "in-the-know" by automatically sending you an EXACT copy of every text message sent and received, and a thumbnail of every photo snapped -- even if the messages or images were deleted from the phone. See any inappropriate texting or sexting right away, so you can take action.
SMS/Text Messages
Get transcripts of text message conversations - every word that was typed on both sides of the conversation. Discover if your children are sending or receiving inappropriate text messages or are being contacted by strangers.
Web History
Review the address of EVERY website your child visits. Find out if your children are visiting inappropriate websites and how frequently they are visited. Know if your kids are spending too much time surfing for fun when they should be learning.
Location
Find out where your kids are and when they were there by using the GPS or cell site location of the phone. Did your teenager really go to the library after school to study or did she go to a friend's house to party?
Voice Call Log
See who your child called (and who is calling him) and the duration of the call. Find out if your children are talking on the phone during times when you have asked them not to, such as after their bedtime.
