Energy Drinks
Do kids really need more energy?!

Energy drinks are under-studied, overused and can be dangerous for children and teens,  warns a report by doctors.  The potential side effects of these popular, caffeine-loaded products, include heart palpitations, seizures, stroke and even sudden death.  The study, conducted by the Medical Journal of Pediatrics, reviewed data from the government and interest groups, scientific literature, case reports and articles in popular and trade media.

Reports claim that some cans have four to five times more caffeine than soda. This new  disturbing trend now targeting our youth is not only physically unhealthy, but should also send off warning signals to parents. These "energy drinks" are creating a "high" for teens and, because they come in a can similar to a soda can, many kids feel the drinks must be safe since they contain "natural" ingredients.  In 2006, 31% of teenagers in the US said they consumed energy drinks, representing 7.6 million teens. Some of them may gulp down several cans in a row to get a buzz.  A US study in 2006 found a surprising number of Poison Control Center calls from young people getting sick from too much caffeine in energy drinks. This has raised much concern among medical doctors.

Caffeine intoxication                                                                                                             Simply stated, this occurs when the body is poisoned by an overdose of caffeine. Symptoms include restlessness, nervousness, excitement, insomnia, rapid heartbeat and stomach problems. In extreme cases, it can be fatal.

Another alarming product is the new "downer drinks" hitting the market labeled "Drank", whose tagline states "Extreme Relaxation Beverage....Slow Your Roll." The misconception about these drinks is that they have organic, natural ingredients which would make you think they are healthy. There is not enough long-term data which reports what the side-effects could be years down the line.

Tips for Parents:

  • Read all labels and use the Internet to research any type of drink your child may be drinking.
  • Some energy drinks on the market even contain alcohol.  It is hard to visually tell from the can.
  • Talk with your child about making healthy, moderate choices with any liquid consumption besides H2O.
  • Talk with them about the importance on staying hydrated especially during the hot months, and how carbonated of caffeinated drinks actually with dehydrate you.

Teach kids rules for safer gaming

Keep personal information a secret.  Advise kids never to share personal information about themselves or their family with other players, such as their real name, email or home address, age, gender, pictures, and the like.

Protect game accounts with strong passwords.

  • Strong passwords are at least eight characters (longer is better) and include a mix of letters, numbers and symbols.

  • Cheaters and hackers most often gain access because they were given a password, so teach kids never to share passwords with anyone (except parents).

Make up a safe gamer name.  Help children choose screen names that do not reveal anything personal, are not suggestive, and do not make kids easy to locate.

Talk with your children about online bullies -- how to spot one and how not to become one.

  • Treat fellow gamers the way they would like to be treated.

  • Do not use unlicensed copies of games.

Never meet an online "friend" in person.

Children and Teens should play only with family or friends you already know.

Learn how your gaming unit works.
  • Some gaming units can connect to the Internet, which allows your child to play with anyone globally.
  • Know the protocol for reporting inappropriate or violent behavior.
  • Be sure the games your child is playing are age appropriate.
Last but not least....It is always best to first set rules and time limits to playing to avoid any issues.
