Getting the kids ready for school is always a hectic time, as parents we are almost always thinking of what "they" need for school; clothes, binders, etc.. Many times as parents we might forget how stressful it can be for kids starting school, whether it may be a new school, a new teacher, or new surroundings. Anxiety, peer pressure, self esteem are all "real" issues that your child may be feeling. Talking to your child and opening dialogue with them can help reduce there fears. Sometimes kids might feel embarrassed with what they are feeling, so sharing with them some of your own personal stories in relation to this can help break down that communication barrier. Here are some great conversation starters you can use:
"When I was your age I remember feeling_____before going back to school"?
"I wonder who your teach is going to be this year...who would you like to have?"
I remember when I started (High School) or (Middle School) I was is so excited, how do you feel about it?
Engaging in conversation with your kids, and talking with them instead of to them is such a critical part to building a solid foundation of communication. For additional information www.azmask.org
