Making the Blue Ribbon Pledge

crashThis month we launched our final Trauma Drill of the year at Pinnacle High School.  A mock crash was staged in the morning as students drove into school.  MASK, AirEvac, Phoenix Fire, and Phoenix Police all collaborated together to bring this visual message across. Later that morning the Junior and Senior students attended an assembly to hear testimonies, watch videos, and educational information to enlighten them on the negative effects of distracted driving.  After the assembly hundreds of students signed the Blue Ribbon Pledge to not TEXT and Drive, or Drink and Drive.  They all walked away with a Blue Awareness Ribbon to display in their vehicles.  It was an amazing event, thank you all who participated in this joint effort.  If we save ONE life, that makes all the difference.

Texting & Driving
(The other two that don't mix)

text/driving
We all know that drinking and driving is dangerous and can be a deadly mix.  Texting while driving is the equivalent of having two to three alcoholic beverages in your system.  The average text will take away your vision from driving by the length of a football field.  This is a dangerous trend not only for new drivers but also for parents.  Too many people have become too accustomed to checking e-mail or sending a text while behind the wheel, even though it's as dangerous as drinking and driving.
The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute concluded that people who send text messages while driving are 23 times more likely to be in a crash (or what they call a near-crash event) than non-distracted drivers.
24 states have banned texting and driving, but unfortunately it will take more teens dying to ultimately make a change.   Make the change yourself, don't wait for the laws to change or a life taken away.  Their are cell phone programs you can purchase to eliminate that for your teens or yourself.  It is your Choice.

Parent Teen Driving Contract
contract
  • Motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) are the leading cause of death in people age 16 to 20. MVAs account for about 1/3 of deaths of people in this age group.
  • People age 16 to 20 have the highest fatality rate due to MVAs than that of any other age group.
  • Over 6000 teenagers of driving age die in automobile accidents every year.
  • For every teenager killed, about 100 have injuries that are not fatal. MVAs are the leading cause of disability related to head and spinal cord injuries.
Driving is an exciting time for young drivers, it is the open door to freedom and independence. It is also a great time to set boundaries and to discuss topics that need to be addressed prior to letting your child on the open road. There are many topics that you can address with your child in advance that you as well as your young driver might not be thinking about. Examples include who will be paying for gas, registration, maintenance on the vehicle. Others might  include curfew, driving locations, and  safety precautions.

Talking about these topics before they begin driving helps eliminate conflicts, and makes a clear understanding in advance.
