Sculpture in Philadelphia & now in Washington D.C. too!
February 2010
Greetings!

Last call! The Flower Show is just about here. Celebrate all that you love about gardens at The Philadelphia International Flower Show. It's a great opportunity to fast forward into spring. I will be introducing my new two part fig, sweet rounded peach and Ichiban Eggplant at the show. The show opens on February 28th and runs thru March 7th. Hope to see you there!

There will be another opportunity to see my sculpture, if your schedule doesn't allow a visit to Philadelphia. The design/build firm Surrounds Landscape Architecture and Construction from Northern Virginia will feature my sculpture in their booth at The Washington Home and Garden Show. The D.C. show runs Friday March 12th thru Sunday March 14th at the Convention Center. For more information check out the website.

A Horticultural hint for delaying February doldrums: two favorite shrubs bring welcome color into subdued winter gardens.

The deciduous Holly called Winterberry (Ilex Verticillata) has bare stems adorned with spectacular red berries. I use these 'bird friendly' shrubs in the dwarf form, and fabulous taller forms massed in naturalistic gardens, though they are fantastic in more formal gardens, too. Eastern bluebirds, robins, and cedar waxwings love the berries.

A second valuable addition to the winter scene is Red Twig Dogwood (Cornus Sibirica). Small white spring flowers become blue/white berries favored by warblers, flickers and robins; the summer habit is lush followed by burgundy wine tinged fall foliage. Though, grow it for the bright red stems glowing in winter light.
