My Interview with
Maui Jon
Maui Jon

Kay:  You started your Maui information site long before Blogging became popular.  What possessed you to want to share all this information?

JON:  After my first trip to Maui in 1979, a friend who was about to go to Maui asked me where to stay, where to eat, and what to see and do there.  So my wife and I gave him a hand-written one-page list.  The next time we went to Maui, we found many more things to add, so we typed up the list and it was three pages long.  Then we went back every year and added a little more information to the list.  By the early 1990's it was 25 pages long, and I put it on a web page on America Online.  In 1999 I put it on my own website at www.mauihawaii.org,
where it has now grown to over 300 pages.

Kay: Have you eaten at all of the 120 restaurants that you review on your website, and stayed at all of the 80 hotels and condos you review there?  Did you take all the photos?

JON:  I have eaten at all of those restaurants, and took all the photos of the food.  I have not stayed at all of the hotels and condos, but I have visited all of them and took all of the photos.  I have been to all of the sights and seen or participated in the activities.  It's a tough job, but somebody has to do it.

Kay:  What is your favorite Maui restaurant and why?

JON:  Plantation House is my favorite fine-dining restaurant on the west side, and Sarentos on the Beach is my favorite on the south side, because they combine great food with great views.  Cane and Taro on the west side, and Cuatro on the south side, are my favorite moderate-priced restaurants because their food is excellent.  For inexpensive places, my favorites are Penne Pasta on the west side and Eskimo Candy on the south side.

Kay:  Have you ever thought about writing a book on Maui?  People would pay for this information.

JON:  Many people have told me to put all of this Maui information this into a book.  But I prefer writing a website, because I can constantly keep it up to date.  Restaurants, and to a lesser extent condos and activities, are constantly changing on Maui.  Even if a book comes out with a new edition every year or two, it can never be as current as a website that I can
update any day.

Kay:  What is in all this for you?

JON:  I love Maui, so I love learning about Maui and telling other people what I have learned about Maui.  This if FUN!

Kay:  When and why did you decide to buy a condo at the Mahana?

JON:  We bought a condo in 1992, when we decided we wanted to spend more time on Maui after my retirement in 2001.  We chose the Mahana because it is one of the very few Maui condos where every unit is ocean-front, right on the beach.  I do not recommend buying a condo for anyone who will be spending less than a couple months per year on Maui.  And I do not recommend timeshares for anyone, no matter how much or how little time you plan to spend on Maui.

Kay:  What's next for your Maui Vacations website?

JON:  I added a monthly email Maui Newsletter last year.  (There is a newsletter signup button next to the top menu on each page of the website.)  I add more restaurants and condos every year.  I started making pages about each sight and activity and have many more of those to add over the coming year.

Sheraton Maui

Greetings!

I have been paying attention to the weather in the mainland and I hear that it is pretty cold  pretty much everywhere in the mainland USA.  Trust me when I say it is sunny and warm here in Maui!  I am not trying to tease you, just sharing the facts.  And it is amazing how many people are planning last minute vacations to Maui to escape that cold.  There have been some great deals as many of the hotels are offering reduced room rates with round trip airfare.  If you are thinking of a return trip this year, send me an email and let me price out some comparisons.  You may be surprised.

The Sheraton Maui
In December, we joined the staff of McCoy Travel for a Holiday weekend at the Sheraton Maui!  What a beautiful hotel in such a great location. They have a seamless check-in meaning you pretty much arrive and go straight to your room.  We stopped at the Front Desk, were handed the keys and off we went.  It took less than 2 minutes.  I was pleasantly surprised.
Sheraton room

Our room was in Hale Lahaina and was a very nice sized room with 2 double beds.  There was a nice bottle of wine and cheese and crackers waiting in the room.  The kids love receiving amenities.  We all feel so special.  There is a resort fee at the Sheraton Maui of $25 per night that includes self parking, wireless internet in the room, lobby and by the pool bars, unlimited local calls and Starwood shuttle service within Kaanapali and to Lahaina.

We did a tour of the hotel to visit different category rooms and suites, restaurants, fitness center and the Spa at Black Rock.  My favorite rooms are the Ocean Front Deluxe, these are located right out on Black Rock.  You have a great view to see whales and I had clients who actually heard the whales exhale from this room category.  Amazing!!

While at the Sheraton, we ate the Daily Breakfast Buffet and were pleased with the selection.  Plenty of fresh fruit, omelet station, and my personal favorite was the corned beef hash Eggs Benedict.  Yummy!
And we also dined at the Black Rock Steakhouse one evening, we were pleased with the setting, service and the food was delicious.

The Sheraton Maui is an easy hotel for me to recommend.  Located on the best part of Kaanapali Beach for snorkeling, walking distance to the shops and restaurants at Whaler's Village.  For adults traveling alone, families and honeymooners, this hotel has something for everyone.

Use
The Sheraton hotel was a really big hotel. There was a lot of yard space to play with my sisters. It had a nice big pool but it was cold everywhere. I had to ditch Aaliyah sometimes and go jump in the hot tub. Part of the Sheraton is the cliff called Black Rock. Many people jump off Black Rock. You have to climb the cliff to go to the jumping spots. There was also the fitness room where my mom and I went to. It was a journey to get there. Couple elevators, couple flights of stairs and just adventuring to where it is. It was actually an alright fitness room. It had a great view but not many machines.

Maya & Aaliyah's Keiki Corner
Maya and Aaliyah spent a good majority of time in the pool.  They found these fun floating bean bags and floated all around.  It was funny when they would slip off, watching them try to get back on.  Best bet is to take it to the steps and then sit down.

The girls also like the open lawn space.  We had some hearty games of paddle ball going on.  Maya wanted to go jump off Black Rock, though she couldn't seem to get anyone to join her.  Maybe another day.
