New Place to Find Volunteer Opportunities
If you are interested in volunteering with DNMM, or if you have friends who want to volunteer with us, check out www.volunteermatch.org. Theresa Sproull, our volunteer coordinator, will be listing all of our new volunteer opportunities there. As of the end of June we have several options listed at Volunteer Match - including three fun ways for you to work with our summer youth program:
-
hang out with a bunch of students on Wednesday afternoons during the summer - play games, have conversations, and encourage shy kids to join in the fun
-
take a few students to the Planetarium in Bay City and to the pool at Delta College, help supervise the students during the day, and help set up for a picnic. (You don't have to swim at the pool but you can if you want!)
-
drive a small group of students in a Road Rally on July 22 and help them search for clues to end up at a fun event. You'll also help supervise lunch.
We can use volunteers all year long, so if you are interested in volunteering, check us out at www.volunteermatch.org. Enter 48640 in the "Find an Opportunity" box and type Disability Network in the "Search" box to locate volunteer activities with us. (Typing DNMM in the "Search" box won't work.) If you don't see any volunteer activities that feel right for you, or if you'd rather interact with a person than with the Volunteer Match site, email Theresa at sproull@dnmm.org or call her at 989-835-4041. |
Andrea to the Rescue...
Helping Al Remain Independent Andrea Sneller, our Information and Referral Specialist, helps people file for Social Security Disability or Supplemental Security Income. Recently she was able to help a person who has multiple disabilities file for and get his SSI/SSDI approved. Al has owned his own business for several years, but in the past few years has found that because of his disabilities he is not able to do most of the things it takes to keep his business running. He was working with staff at another agency who knew that Andrea helps with SSI/SSDI so they gave her a call. Andrea and Al filed for his SSDI claim in July of 2009 and in March of 2010 Al's claim was approved.
Al was really happy when he received his first check. "I was able to pay my bills and get caught up. I don't know what I would have done if I didn't get the help from you (DNMM.)" When asked if he would recommend DNMM's services to others, Al didn't hesitate. "Of course I would 100 percent. You really helped me out when I needed it." If you would like to learn more about the Information and Referral services at DNMM call 1-800-782-4160.

Area Students Participate in Michigan Youth Leadership Forum The Michigan Youth Leadership Forum (MYLF) gives high school juniors and seniors who have disabilities a unique opportunity to develop their leadership, citizenship and social skills. The MYLF activities give participating students an opportunity to turn their disabilities into strengths. By providing a framework of disability history and an atmosphere of encouragement, MYLF offers peers with common challenges and experiences the opportunity to learn from one another and to realize that they are the people who determine their limits. They learn that they can rise above the apparent limits set by their disabilities. Students with disabilities and leadership potential who wanted to take part in this free opportunity entered a statewide competition. Participants were selected based on their submitted essays. The group chosen represented the state in terms of geography, gender, ethnicity and types of disabilities. This year, two students from our community had the opportunity to be part of this five-day event at the State Capitol. Otto Guild, a member of the Dow High Class of 2012, was surprised that he was accepted for the leadership forum. He read the ADA and wrote a paper about it as part of his application process. He was not at all confident that he would be able to be part of the summer event. "When my mom said she heard from them I thought that they had rejected me but she told me that I was accepted. I was excited," said Otto. Katie Waters, a member of the Dow High Class of 2011, applied with confidence but was happy to hear that she would be participating in the program this year. Otto and Katie were able to socialize with other potential leaders, learn about job interview etiquette, and work together with the other students to create a bill to submit to the State Legislature. Otto came up with the name of this year's bill - The Teachers' Disability Awareness Act. He and Katie also were able to participate in other ways to help get the bill passed by the legislature. All the students engaged in a role-playing activity at the Capital; some students were assigned to be lobbyists, some to provide expert testimony regarding the proposed bill, others to debate the bill with state legislature members, etc. Otto and Katie were testifiers. As a result of the hard work of all the students, the bill passed. Otto said the best part of the event for him was seeing and hearing the motivational speakers. Listening to Jim "Basketball" Jones and participating in other activities were great. Although Otto isn't sure about what he'll do after high school - he's considering going into music or counseling at this point - he said that participating in the MYLF program has made him feel more confident about his future. Katie is considering participating in MYLF again next year as a Program Assistant. When asked how the experience has changed her, Katie said, "I feel more open about my disability now, more confident." |
Ready for Adventure?
Disability Network was on the scene for the grand opening of the new Access Adventure Trail in Mt. Pleasant on June 26. More than 300 people enjoyed the newest addition to Chipp-A-Water Park at 1403 West High Street - on M-20 - made possible by a grant from the W.K. Kellogg foundation. People of all abilities enjoyed the kickoff of this Access to Recreation project.
The new, universally-accessible trail connects to the city's existing barrier-free Riverwalk Pathway. The scenery varies throughout the park from open grassy areas to river views to urban areas and stands of mature trees. There are viewing points and picnic stops tucked into the Access Adventure Trail in all the right places. However, it is the bridge that is one of a kind. This uniquely-designed pedestrian bridge crosses the Chippewa River and offers an unobstructed view of the river without interrupting the route for passersby. C.L. Trucking was surprised to get such an unusual request, and rose to the occasion when they developed this one of a kind structure.
The event also celebrated the contributions of the late Gregory K. Baderschneider. His vision of community and extensive work in the park trail system made opportunities such as this possible. The Riverwalk Trail system was fittingly renamed "The GKB Riverwalk Trail" in his honor.
Access to Recreation projects are created so that people of all abilities can participate and join in the fun. Input from people with disabilities is sought so that features included truly meet a variety of needs and interests. More than 30% of families are directly impacted by disability. Inclusive settings such as the Access Adventure Trail give all members of families opportunities to play together. The park is open all year from 8:00 am to 11:00 pm. |
