Subscriber Updates - December 2009

To  reduce eyestrain, make it easy to access key information and ensure that we have archived versions of our Subscriber notifications, GEC will be sending our occasional system and standard update notices through this newsletter format in future.

This 'issue' notes two major advances for EPEAT - the IEEE Standards Board's final adoption of the revised 1680 and 1680.1 standards, and the addition of Singapore to the EPEAT registry country list. Details below - and as always, feel free to contact me with any questions.

PLEASE NOTE the January 1, 2010 conformance deadline for meeting the ENERGY STAR 5.0 (computers) and 5.0 (displays) specifications.

IEEE 1680 Standard Revisions Approved

On Wednesday December 9, 2009 the IEEE Standards Board approved the revisions of the 1680-2006standard, which split the standard into two sections - one which lays out the system for product registration and verification, and the other (1680.1) which contains the Computer/Display product criteria.

The new standards also contain some significant changes which require attention from all EPEAT SUbscribers:
  •  It codifies the system for international, country-specific registration of products
  • It closes the ENERGY STAR grace period - now all registered products must meet new ENERGY STAR specifications as of their effective date or be removed from the registry
  • Other less major changes - the key points have been sent to you earlier and are posted on epeat.net
  • Please note - Wayne is preparing a clarifying note on the new provisions affecting button battery-containing products and will communicate that guidance out to all Subscribers shortly
NOTE:  ENERGY STAR 5.0 DEADLINE Jan 2

As a result of the recent standard revision , porducts may no longer remain actively registered if they do not meet the newest ENERGY STAR specifications. Prior to this change, products registered prior to the ENERGY STAR effective date could remain on the registry for six months.

Subscribers must either update their product registrations to reflect products' compliance with ENERGY STAR 5.0 (the computer spec which came into effect on July 1, 2009, or the display specification which came into effect on October 31, 2009) or archive any product that does not meet ENERGY STAR 5.0 for computers or monitors, as of the EPEAT deadline of January 2, 2010.

Any product remaining on the active registry yet not reflecting ESTar 5.0 compliance will be archived by GEC on January 3, 2010.

Singapore Added to EPEAT Registry

The EPEAT Board of Advisors voted to accept the nomination of Singapore for addiiton to the EPEAT Registry countries list at their December 2-3 meeting in Austin,TX.

Singapore will become available on the registry as of next week, but product listings will not become active for 60 days, per the Country Addition procedure approved by the BofA. For now, products may be registered but not activated - as of February 5, we will make available a facility for batch activation of products registered in Singapore by individual Subscribers.

To nominate countries for addition to EPEAT, please visit the EPEAT International Registration pages or contact Sarah with questions.
