Concord's Barnes & Noble Book Fair - Saturday, May 19th
Second Notice
Don't miss Concord's 'Stock-Up for Summer' Book Fair and Author Event at the Galleria Barnes & Noble on Saturday, May 19th.
TWO author events have been planned especially for Concord students! At 11:00am, author Jacqueline West will read and sign books from her new middle grade series, The Books of Elsewhere.
Then, at 1:00 pm, author & illustrator Chris Monroe will read, sign and teach us to draw monkeys just like Chico Bon Bon, star of her Monkey with a Tool Belt books. Chico is a favorite in our early grades, so this author event will be of special interest to our K-1 crowd.
There will be two ways to make purchases so that a percentage of each sale benefits Concord's library and summer reading program.
Purchase In Store: Sat, May 19th
On Saturday, May 19th from open to close, Barnes & Noble will donate to Concord a percentage of any sale made at ANY Barnes & Noble store when our voucher is presented at checkout. The required voucher is available here, on the Concord homepage, in the school office, and will be provided at the event. In-store sales of Nooks are included.
Purchase Online: Sat, May 19- Sun, May 27
Concord will also earn a portion of online sales made from May 19 through May 24 when Concord's bookfair ID is entered at checkout. See where and how to enter Concord's ID# here. (The online offer includes Nooks, but excludes sales of ebooks).
If you know you will be buying books for summer, please consider buying them during Concord's Barnes & Noble Book Fair. Not sure what to buy? Check out the lists of recommended summer reading on Concord's homepage. Then join us at the bookfair!

Concord Community Produce Garden - Fundraiser - May 22nd @ Davanni's
A produce garden is going to be constructed at Concord this spring. Different plants, especially fruits and vegetables will be grown to enrich learning for students. This large scale Service Learning Adventure will replace the small; shoe box sized plastic containers that are used to grow plants for science projects and activities. Mr. Tower's class along with former Concord student, Brian Wandrei is working hard to make this garden a reality. Brian is working on Eagle Scout Project by building the raised beds and putting up a fence for the garden. He is also coordinating a Fundraiser to raise money to help build and grow our garden.
Please join us at Davanni's on Tuesday, May 22nd from 5:00 to 9:00 pm for dinner with your family and friends. The money you spend for dinner, 20% of that will go toward our garden. The fundraiser is taking place at the Gus Young Lane Davanni's in Edina. Please click on the link to access the coupon. Please bring the coupon with you to Davanni's.

Health Office Highlights
Pertussis In Edina Public Schools we are seeing children with confirmed cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough. This is a bacterial disease that affects the lungs and can cause severe illness especially in infants. Early symptoms include runny nose, sneezing, mild cough, and possibly fever. After 1 or 2 weeks, your child may cough in explosive bursts. These coughing attacks can end in vomiting and/or in a high-pitched whoop. Coughing attacks occur most often at night and can last up to three months. Between coughing spells, the person seems well.
Children and adults who have been immunized can still get pertussis.
Call your physician if your child: -Has had a cough for 7 days or more, especially if there is vomiting or the cough worsens at night. -Has been exposed to someone with pertussis.
Tell your health care provider that there is pertussis in the school and ask for lab testing.
If your child has been coughing for 7 days or more, please keep the child at home until he or she has seen a physician and lab reports are back. Your child must stay out of school for 5 days while being treated for pertussis. Children should not attend sleepovers or other group activities during the 5 days of treatment since they may transmit pertussis to others.
Communicable Illnesses: Reporting communicable illnesses to the health office helps us control the spread of illness. When your child is ill, please make sure that you leave information about the illness on the absence line or call the health office. The communicable illnesses reported to the Concord health office for the week of May 7 - May 11 are: Head lice: 1
