veterans of workshops past. assemble!
|
Greetings!
Since you are part of the very select group of people who have attended one of our Amherst Writers and Artists-style workshops here at the house on 48th Avenue in the past three years, I wanted to give a special bow and shout out to you and let you know that this Saturday Jan. 8 we're starting up again at 3 p.m. at the house, and there's still room, and it would be great to see you. It is always great to see people keep coming back and stick with the AWA method. I have observed over the last three years that it does tend to have its greatest effect with steady application. Our Tuesday evening workshops will also resume soon. It is possible to sign up now, but I don't have a start date yet. Once enough people have signed up, or have expressed a firm interest, we're ready to go! So if you are interested, but not ready to sign up without a firm start date, please e-mail me at cary@carytennis.com.

the dogs miss you. |
Norma and I miss you, too, but the dogs can't speak for themselves so we speak for them. It's our way of giving back to the animal kingdom. Remember how good the coffee is? And Norma's baking? Oh, man. I'm so glad we're starting up again.

speaking of which ...

I'm finally getting to the point of taking all these little pieces I've done and sorting them out and finishing them and sending them out. So if you are interested in sharing in that activity, let me know, too. It's easier done collectively. And even though I haven't been doing it as much as I'd like to, I do believe that sending out work to small magazines is a crucial activity for writers in our culture, and it's something I've struggled with for years. OK, so I subscribe to Poets and Writers magazine and I read all the awards and grants and submissions places, and ... well, it's slow. I get filled up with envy and resentment and also sometimes pure boredom and outrage ... but that doesn't help. I have to be sending out my work. We all do.
|
if you want to do it too, let me know
|
We can do it together. We can send our work out. I've done it that way in the past. I had a Post Office Poetry-sending buddy and we'd go to the Post Office together and send out our work. Now, with Cary Tennis Books LLC, we have our own postage machine and mailing station. We've very good at mailing envelopes. We have expertise in that area. It's one of our core competencies. Ha ha. So you can take advantage of that. And together we can help each other send out our work so it gets into these little magazines and we get to show each other the little magazines our work is published in. It's pretty cool and it's a vital function of American literary culture, which, by dint of being writers, we're a part of whether we think it's cool or not.

it's just the right thing to do ....
|
... to participate in this very small but powerful world of dedicated writers of fiction and poetry, many unknown, writing alone or in small groups in humble locations throughout the world, not getting famous, not getting rich, just being true to their craft and sending their work out. It's a rich and marvelous culture and I do aim to be a part of it. I think we should all be a part of it.

so keep in touch
