you're on my list
Greetings!
That is, you're on my list of people who checked a little box on my e-mail signup form or somehow gave me the impression they'd be interested in hearing about upcoming creative getaways, so ...
i'm wondering if you'd be interested ...
... in spending a few days in a gorgeous spot breathing crystal-clear air, eating marvelous food, looking down at a pristine Northern California bay and gathering in historic McCargo Hall with like-minded people to write, dream and explore, laugh, create, tap deep emotions, and also to wander in solitude, look at birds, listen to folks read from their work and the work of others, tell jokes, hear Cary and Norma play Irish tunes on guitar and violin (I should have my new acoustic by then), and form lasting bonds with other creative people who, perhaps like you, have reached a turning point in their creative lives and want to shake things up and explore and take some chances and give their creative souls what they need to thrive. I'm also wondering if you are interested in seeing how long a sentence I can write if I just keep splicing clauses together with commas and conjunctions. I can do that. I could keep this up all night. But the January Creative Getaway is coming right up, so if you can make it, please let me know soon, so we can make room for you, because it's getting close to filling up. And if you have questions, please feel free ask. That's what I'm here for. (As long as I remember to read my e-mail)

how we work
Well, we use the Amherst Writers and Artists method. Plus I meet with people individually. Plus we eat three meals a day together and a lot of talking takes place there, some of it serious, some of it social. Here's a detailed schedule you may find useful. In the morning workshops we mainly write. We have some afternoon workshops too, led by me or sometimes led by experienced participants while I meet individually with people. Plus if you are working on something for which you need hours and hours of solitude, skip the workshops and just use the time as you see fit. Wander, meditate, edit, revise, get inspiration, sit and stare into space, that kind of thing. Then, eat. Always we eat. We eat in the main dining room of Marconi; breakfasts and lunches are buffet; dinner is sit-down. Wine is available on request, or you can bring some. We can usually work it out with the great kitchen staff.

plus: i've been playing a lot of guitar
Did you know that at one time I was a pretty serious guitar player? Then I kinda burned out on it. Well, it's more complicated than that. I explain some of it here. While recovering from cancer surgery I found that playing music once again gave me solace -- as it did when as a teenager I first started playing. So now I play mainly just stuff, inventions, modal improvisations, blues improvisations, a few songs if I can remember them. But it sounds pretty good. That's the main thing. I like the way it sounds, and others do, too. And I'm planning to buy a good new guitar. So in the evenings at the getaway we gather in McCargo Hall around the fireplace and we read aloud from things we like, and play music and tell jokes like old timey folks who didn't have no TV or radio or Internet. And I should have my new guitar by then! Hope to see you at this or one of the upcoming getaways in April, July or October. best cary t.
