Pearls of Wisdom

Five Quick Tips for working on Girl Scout Awards

We asked Amanda Chastain, Girl Scout Volunteer, Wichita, about working through the Bronze Award with Junior Girl Scouts. She said: "Here are some steps I gave my girls. The biggest step was just deciding on what their project would be. They had lots of good ideas!

  1. Brainstorm and write down any and all ideas. Where does your heart lie? Where do you want to make the biggest difference?
  2. Narrow list down. Look over the big list. Pick your top 5 ideas that mean the most to you.
  3. How much time do you have to achieve your goals? Cross out any of the remaining 5 that you don't feel you have the time or adequate resources to accomplish.
  4. Once you decide on your project, break it down into steps. Give yourself deadlines to achieve each step.
  5. Do the work. Sounds easy, but it's easy for life to get in the way. Ask your parent, leader, and/or sister Girl Scouts for help when you need it. Learn to delegate!

In 1914, Juliette Gordon Low sold her pearls to fund the cost of expanding the Girl Scout movement across the United States. It is a symbol of personal sacrifice and sharing.  Do you have your own pearls of wisdom to share? Send them to Holly Slawkowski.
