Superintendent's Corner

As our district
begins
the 2009-2010 school year, I begin my first year as Superintendent of School. However, as many of you know, I'm no stranger to the Woburn Public Schools. I served as Principal of the Clapp Elementary School for ten years. For the past five years, I was in the role of Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum under our previous Superintendent, Dr. Carl Batchelder.
I'm honored to work with a very talented staff all of whom contribute to the education of our students in one way or another. I also want to thank so many people for their support and words of encouragement. Woburn truly is a special community. There's no place I'd rather be. Best wishes to all for a great school year!

Focus Areas for 2009-2010

           Mark Donovan, Superintendent
Dr. Gary Reese, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum

Magnifying GlassAt a recent meeting of the Woburn School Committee, Assistant Superintendent Gary Reese and I outlined our areas of focus for the new school year. My focus areas are:

1. Gain a more thorough knowledge of our school system.
2. Develop our own school and district profiles to be used with similar reports at the state level.
3. Include 21st century skills in our curriculum so that our students will be prepared for a changing and more complex society.
4. Increase communication about the Woburn Public Schools so that everyone is aware of the many high-quality activities going on in our schools.

In addition, Dr. Reese has identified some of his main interests as he takes on his new role. His focus areas are:

1. Learn as much as possible about our school district with an emphasis on looking at the "big picture".
2. Identify "Power Standards" so that teachers can focus their instructional efforts in a more meaningful way.
3. Use "data meetings" to help principals and teachers make instructional decisions.
We are "Moodling" in  the  Woburn Public Schools
                        Barbara Henry
                           Director of Educational Technology

The Technology Department is very excited to begin this new school year.  We had 12 Middle and High School teachers take an online course this summer to learn how to create an online course.  The coursework was offered via Framingham State College and The Learning Curve.

Each teacher worked through 8 weeks of an online course while at the same time developing a course for their students.  While some teachers are still "tweaking" and refining their class, others are ready to go!  We hope to see this online learning incorporated in the regular classroom instruction and help prepare our students for those 21st Century skills. At this point, teachers have registered approximately 275 students for various courses.

Moodle is "open source" software that is gaining popularity in the education community. Its ease of use and customization offers teachers a way to provide another alternative to classroom instruction and home assignments.  We hope to expand our "Moodle" offerings as the year progresses.

Clapp-Goodyear Update

                                         Principal
Clapp PlaygroundAt the Clapp-Goodyear, we are moved in and enjoying our new expanded learning space.  Along with 8 new modular classrooms, we added increased playground space.  In addition, many traffic and safety additions were made.  The boys and girls from both the Clapp and the Goodyear seem very happy in our school and have reported loving their new friends!  We are making lots of plans and have reshifted our schedules here.  We are also offering a before school program as well as an afterschool program.  We have combined with the YMCA to offer quality service to children during our afternoons.  We are excited about this year!

Teaching American History
                            Dr. Gary Reese

A few years ago,  Burlington Public Schools invited us and some other districts to partner with them to apply for a federal Teaching American History grant. This past summer, the grant was finally approved. This grant will provide a variety of professional development opportunities to our history teachers over the next four years.  At this time, the first cohort is forming for the 2009-2010 school year.  The theme for this school year  is Dreams of Freedom and Bounty: Immigration to America.  We would like to thank Jane Hundley from the Burlington Public School for all of her hard work on this grant.

Teachers: This year's program is open to grade 3 and 5 teachers, as well as middle and high school history teachers.  Space is limited!!!  Registration requests must be received by September 30, 2009.  For more information about the program, visit the curriculum tab on our Sharepoint site (http://sharepoint ). You have to be signed onto a school computer to access our local intranet.

Thanks for taking the time to read our newsletter. We'll continue to refine the format so that we can include as much useful information as possible. We'd like to spread the word about the Woburn Public Schools, so please forward this message to anyone who might be interested. Everyone is invited to click on the "Join Our Mailing List" button at the top of the page to subscribe to this newsletter.

Sincerely,

Mark Donovan
