Greetings!

Welcome to our district newsletter! This newsletter is designed to provide you with information about the many positive activities going on in the Woburn Public Schools. It is intended for all staff members as well as the general public. Please forward this newsletter to anyone you think might be interested in learning about our school system and encourage him/her to subscribe. We want everyone to hear the good news about the Woburn Public Schools!

Sincerely,
Mark Donovan
Superintendent of Schools

NOTE: Thank you to our eagle-eyed readers of the first version of  our newsletter. A few of you pointed out that Gary Reese was principal of the Linscott Elementary School. Somehow, the spell check process decided to substitute its own spelling for the name of the school. This newsletter is the new and improved version.
New Ways to Communicate

We've come a long way since the pencil was invented. This newsletter is one of at least three additions to the way we communicate with everyone. We have also started a blog related to the Clapp-Goodyear merger. This site is a model for what will eventually become a superintendent's blog. In addition to the newsletter and the blog, we will soon roll out our newly-designed district web site. The design will allow us to share information with you in a timely, user-friendly way.
Additions to our Leadership Team
We are very pleased to welcome two new key members of our Leadership Team:

Dr. Gary Reese, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum:  Actually, we're welcoming Dr. Reese back to our school district. As many of you know, Gary served as Principal of the Linscott Elementary School from 2001 to 2006. For the past two years, Gary has served as the Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment for the Millbury Public Schools. He brings a wealth of expertise to his new position. His knowledge of curriculum and his experience in the Woburn Public Schools make him a valuable asset to our district.

Mr. Joseph Finigan, Principal, Woburn Memorial High School: Mr. Finigan comes to us from Reading where he served as principal of Reading Memorial High School. During his time in Reading, Joe also served as a teacher, a middle school principal, and a high school assistant principal. Joe has an excellent reputation as a experienced student-oriented educator. We're glad to have him on board.
MSBA Approves Goodyear Building Project

Rendering of the new Goodyear
On Wednesday,
July 29th, the Massachusetts School Building Authority voted to accept the Scope and Budget for the new Goodyear School project. Several members of the Goodyear School Building Committee attended the meeting in Boston, including Mayor McLaughlin, School Committee representative Pat Chisholm, City Auditor Gerry Surrette, and Superintendent Mark Donovan. While some of the final details of the funding arrangements are still being worked out, today's vote is a huge step in moving the project forward. The next step in the process is to secure local funding.

Clapp-Goodyear Merger News: Modular Classroom Building Project

As many of you know, the Clapp and Goodyear Schools are merging in anticipation of the construction of the new Goodyear School. Goodyear students and staff will join the Clapp studentsClapp Modular Installation and staff at the Clapp site. Modular classrooms are being constructed to accommodate all of the student. At this point, all of the modular units have been put into place. This picture shows one of the units being lifted up so it can be placed in position.

Principal Christine Kelley has been working hard with many other people over the summer to get ready for September. We look forward to the opening of school in September.
