Good News
Summer 2011
Greetings!

Summer's sizzle has definitely heated up the goodness at Kids for Peace!  The abundance of great news continues and the opportunities to create even more peace and kindness have been multiplied.  It is a very exciting time!!

As stated by a chapter leader at our recent Leader's Training, Kids for Peace is not just an organization, we are a philosophy and a lifestyle.  Even in such turbulent times, Kids for Peace continues to offer hope, inspiration and positive action towards a better world for all.

This newsletter shares much of our good news as well as offers ways you can help us create a more peaceful world.  Thank you for your support and belief in our powerful and important mission.

With Love and Peace,
Jill McManigal

Kids for Peace 2nd Annual Leaders Training is HUGE Success!!
Leaders Training 2011 Group
Our 2nd Annual Leaders' Training in San Diego was a joyful success!! Thanks to our Southwest Airlines sponsorship, over forty adult and teen leaders attended from all over the United States. Leaders came from as far as Hawaii, Rhode Island,  Minnesota, South Dakota, Massachusetts, Texas, New Jersey, Michigan, and Georgia.  New friendships were formed, hope was multiplied and commitments to our Kids for Peace mission were deepened and enhanced.

We kicked off the training on Friday night with an Inspirational Happy Hour hosted by our Board of Directors. On Saturday we spent the day learning, growing, connecting, playing and progressing at the New World Leadership Children's Academy.  The training culminated at the gorgeous Torrey Pines State Park where we did yoga on the beach with Jodi from Next Generation Yoga, experienced a Dakota Sage Ceremony and then hiked to new heights.

We are so grateful to our Kids for Peace leaders for their elevated dedication, wise vision and empowered passion. They indeed make our world better.

Sioux Falls Peace Packs Sioux Falls Peace Packs 2
Kids for Peace Sioux Falls is so excited to be the first Kids for Peace chapter in South Dakota!  The chapter is led by Allison Alvine, with help from her husband, Greg, and their four children, Owen, Ross, Aden, and Meili.  Even though the chapter has existed for only 7 months, they now have 45 members between the ages of 3 and 13!  These kids have enjoyed planning and participating in their projects, and are proud to be leaders in their community by embracing all people, promoting compassion and peace, and uniting to help those in need!

So far, Kids for Peace Sioux Falls has:

  • Sent Peace Packs to "Theresa's House", an orphanage in the city of Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa.  The orphanage was started by a Sioux Falls resident, and the chapter anxiously awaits her safe return from her trip to Africa, so they can see pictures and hear stories of her travels.
  • Collected a library of books about peace, hope, diversity, and individual responsibility, and donated them to the "Children's Home".  This is a facility located in Sioux Falls that provides a home and treatment for children with a variety of needs.  The chapter also gave each of the 90 children served by Children's Home their own Peace Pledge bookmark.
  • Participated in The Great Kindness Challenge with a variety of planned (and unplanned!) activities throughout the day, including kind deeds at the local fire station, nursing home, library, park, food bank, and Mayor's house....among many others!

When asked "What does Kids for Peace mean to you?," Sioux Falls members said:
"Hearts and flowers for everyone!" (5 year old)
"Nobody being left out." (7 year old)
"I know how to help people's hearts feel better." (7 year old)
"Love." (10 year old)
"It's cool to be nice." (11 year old)
"Being an example to other people that we have a choice to be kind and respect each other and we can all work together and help people that need us." (13 year old)

What's your favorite part of Kids for Peace and why?
My favorite part of Kids for Peace is the Great Kindness Challenge because we get to help people and make them HAPPY!!

What have you learned in Kids for Peace?
I have learned to be kind to others and that kindness spreads.  I was kind to a bully for a year and in second grade I noticed he was kinder to me and others. Kindness really does matter!!!

Why is Kids for Peace important?

Kids for Peace is important because we are helping kids in need by sending Peace Packs to them so they feel better.  Kids for Peace kids are changing the world to be a better place.

What is your wish for the world?

My wish for the world is that everyone use their voice for good.

Carlsbad City Council
Ethan uses his voice for good at a Carlsbad City Council meeting.
