Save the Date!

WRTC is excited to announce its first 5K Run/Walk and children's activities to be held on Sunday, June 13th in Picnic Grove 24 (plenty of parking) at Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C. Our race day will begin at 8:00 a.m. with the run and conclude with children's activities, awards and door prizes. This will be a wonderful opportunity for donor families to come together and meet recipients and transplant professionals to celebrate life. We hope donor families and recipients will form teams with their families and friends to run or walk in memory of their loved one. Details will follow soon at www.beadonor.org and on Facebook at: www.Facebook.com/Beadonor. If you aren't a runner or walker, come and support the cause!
In addition to your team spirit and participation, we need your assistance in order to make this race a success! We are looking for volunteers and sponsors. Join us for a volunteer committee meeting on Monday, March 8 at 6:30 p.m. in WRTC offices. Please contact Lisa A. Colaianni at lisa@wrtc.org for further information. If you are interested in sponsorhip oppotunities please contact Rhonda Griffin, rhonda@wrtc.org or 703-641-0100. |

Comfort Shawls
In October 2003, Lynn Baudo and her family were faced with the devastating injury and death of her 23 year old son, Brian. To help her deal with her stress during Brian's hospitalization Lynn knitted. Brian became an organ donor and Lynn eventually became a volunteer for the Wisconsin Donor Network using her talents to create the Threads of Compassion Comfort Shawl program. The purpose of the Comfort Shawl is to provide the donor family a comforting, tangible expression of compassion as they begin their grief journey. Shawls will be given to donor families by WRTC Family Service specialists during their time in the hospital. The shawls will be knitted or crocheted by volunteers from across the donation community and general public. WRTC will provide the yarn, patterns and packaging for the shawls. When the shawl is completed and returned to WRTC, a printed card will be attached to it.
Please consider becoming a crafter for this very special program. It is truly a volunteer opportunity that you can participate in from virtually anywhere and on your own time frame! Contact Maureen Balderston at 703-641-0100 or via email at:Maureen@wrtc.org. to learn more about the Comfort Shawls.

Volunteer Spotlight
Nyasha Sprow, Miss National American Miss Virginia Pre-teen
When Nyasha Sprow is not busy at school or doing homework, she spends her time volunteering in her community. Nyasha, who is twelve years old, is the youngest of seven siblings, two of whom were organ and tissue donors (Charron and Tinisha) and one of whom died from kidney failure (PJ). She is currently the 2009-2010 Miss Virginia Preteen and spoke about organ and tissue donation in the optional spokes modeling competition. She has continued to use her platform to further educate about the need for organ and tissue donors. She distributed literature and Donate Life wristbands at the national pageant, where she placed in the top 10. She also participates in WRTC events. On January 10, 2010 she participated at the Arlington Diocese Three Kings Festivity, helping children decorate crafts. In addition to her work with WRTC, she is active with the National Kidney Foundation, through which she appeared on Dr. Libby's World of Medicine to discuss her family's experience with donation and transplantation. She also spoke at the 5K Kidney Walk, and next month she will educate fifth graders on healthy habits to prevent kidney disease with a program called Kidney Patrol. She is an active Youth Volunteer with the American Red Cross, where she promotes emergency preparedness through various community events. Congratulations and good job! |
