Celebrate Hispanic Heritage!
Done Vida logoSeptember 15th - October 15th
Hispanic Heritage Month is a great time to celebrate life and honor those who made the decision to save lives through organ and tissue donation.

We encourage everyone to participate at the many events WRTC has scheduled as part of Hispanic heritage celebration!
Done Vida Campaign
Sahra Torres Rivera at Ama tu Vida health fair 2007.
Volunteer Sahra Torres-Rivera (living kidney donor) provided information at Ama tu Vida health fair in Montgomery County.

The Washington Regional Transplant Community would like to take this opportunity to raise awareness among the Hispanic population about the critical need for more organ and tissue donors, and dispel misconceptions that may impede the donation process.

While more than 3,700 Hispanics received organ and tissue transplants in 2008, myths regarding donation continue to be major barriers preventing many Hispanics from becoming registered donors.  During Hispanic Heritage Month, Washington Regional Transplant Community (WRTC) focuses on providing facts and educating people to encourage them to donate life.

STATISTICS:
  • There are more than 17,000 Hispanics on the national organ transplant waiting list.
  • While Hispanics make up approximately 14 percent of the total U.S. population, almost 17% of the more than 103,000 individuals awaiting organ transplants are Hispanic.
  • In 2008, 13 percent of organ donors were Hispanic.
  • Currently there are over 1,900 patients on the local waiting list. Hispanics account for 12% of the patients in the waiting list.

Hispanic Heritage Celebration at DC United!

Nicholas RamirezEach year DC United partners with WRTC to recognize the importance of organ and tissue donation. WRTC will be present at DC United's game on October 3rd against Chivas USA.

This will be a special night for transplant recipient Nicholas and his family. This 5-year-old is enthusiastic about donation for one reason: at two months of age, Nicholas received a life-saving liver transplant.  Because of this-and because of his family's desire to educate people about the need for organ and tissue donors-DC United has decided to name Nicholas as their junior team captain on October 3rd's match. Kickoff begins at 7:30pm at RFK Stadium.

Now, Nicholas is a very active boy who enjoys playing soccer with his siblings and friends. His mother, Sandra has been very active in the Herndon, VA community.  Although until recently Sandra did not own a car, she visited schools, grocery stores, and workplaces to hand out brochures and share her story of how donation saved her son's life. This is a special and exciting opportunity for the family as it will be their first event outside of Herndon!
Montgomery County Latino Donation Awareness Community Taskforce

Last July, WRTC and Suburban Hospital met with a group of representatives from various community and private organizations, to discuss how to increase donation awareness in the County's Latino community.  The goal of this innovate taskforce is to identify strategies for awareness and action. The next meeting will be in October at Suburban Hospital.  If you are interested in joining please contact Faviola Donato-Galindo at 703-641-0100 or faviola@wrtc.org.
If you are interested in volunteering in any of the scheduled events please contact Mary Delaney, mary@wrtc.org or call 703-641-0100.
